I agree that it's a beautiful device. Very cool. Nice to have everything in one slick package like that. I mean, you now have one device to organize your entire life....
Until you lose it. Or break the screen, or have it stolen. Then what? Your entire life just disappeared in a flash. Your entire phone book, organizer, email, iPod, etc, all gone. I pity the first fool who tries to call and get a replacement at a discounted rate.
When the whole thing is the screen, you can't even make a call when it's busted. At least with a regular phone you can still press a button.

It will have and do these things. Even the iPod can do it now. With the addition a slimmed down version of OS X and the ability to use Widgets as applications, we will see a lot of 3rd party apps developed for this thing increasing its funcionality.
Well aren't you too cool for school.

I always thought that iPods should include GPS tracking devices. Stolen iPods is a booming industry. But you don't keep your phone book, organizer, music and everything on the iPhone/iPod alone. You keep a copy of everything on your computer and synch everything. So if my iPod ever did get stolen, I would buy a new one and load it up from my hard drive.
I suspect that people will be selling iPhone armour just like they sell iPod armour. I never worried about that my iPod... it's gotten bumped and beaten in its three years but I figured that if I ever dropped it and shattered the screen that would be a good excuse to get a new model. But I do agree, people will have to judge just how hard they are on their equipment before investing big $$$$ into a device this is one big screen.

Wow, well it was really only a matter of time before apple came out with this. I always imagined thats exactly what the new ipod video would look like, but with a phone too its absolutely sick!

It's not coming out for a long, long, long time.
They have said that it will be June 2007 for the US.
It will be late 2007 or early 2008 for Europe.
If iTunes is any indication we will be a few months after Europe.
Thus, my current iPod will have to struggle through 1 more year.
I'm hoping that at next years MacWorld Steve Jobs comes out with an iPhone that has a 40GB HD just as they become available in Canada.

One month before Apple is about to announce their phone, Cisco releases a product under the name iPhone. To me, it looks like Cisco POSITIONED themselves such that they could sue Apple. They negotiated with Apple to sell them the name WHILE developing a product under that name.
Apple should have renamed the product to iTalk or iMobile or somesuch rather than walk into this lawsuit. So Apple is stupid to continue using iPhone while Cisco is unethical for bargaining in bad faith.

This whole thing is dumb because cleary iPhone by Cisco is clearly jumping on the bandwagon of products that start with i, which was started by Apple with the iPod. It would be interesting if Apple could have a countersuit against Crisco for using the likeness of the name.

Except that, according to the article: " San Jose's Cisco said it has owned the trademark for the iPhone name since June 2000." and the iPod wasn't released until 2001. So, IF those timelines are correct then Cisco didn't jump an any bandwagons.
Although I have little doubt that Cisco is attempting to get as much out of Apple as possible. I also feel a little bad for the guy who owns iphone.com (and has owned it for 13 years - his company is Internet Phone Co).
Edit: Anyone else read the webcomic PvP? Their iPhone strip was pretty good. link

Well, someone has tried to find out about Canadian release dates...
Quote:
There are no official statements but the average wait time is 6-8 months minimum once they become available in the US (check the track record with previous smartphones). I’m also told the iPhone will be available on a two or three year contract, and a data plan must also be purchased (data plans in Canada aren’t cheap). Looks like an accurate release date in Canada is sometime Q4 2007 and into early 2008. About the same time that the phone will be available to European carriers.

You're just upset that Telus isn't going to get the phone
But how is this any different than what is currently out there? If you have your current phone stolen, you still loose all your contacts, unless you have a backed-up copy some where.
iPod, well in order to get songs on it, you have to use iTunes, so your music is backed up already.
As far as breaking, it depends on the break. Even a button phone wont work if you break it good enough.
Welcome to the joys of technology. We get alot of cool and interesting stuff, but if you don't take care of it, or the information you store on it, you are screwed when it fails you.

That's a fantastic idea. There's one hitch. It means that you have a device that is broadcasting your position. Most people get a little freaked out about that. You could set something up so that the unit would only broadcast when pinged or something, but say you lost it in the Dome or something. You wouldn't find it because the GPS unit probably wouldn't track satellites.

Not really. I'm sure we'll get the phone sooner or later. (Obviously later, but for Apple to not make a CDMA version of the phone at some point would cause them to lose a HUGE marketshare.)

"While the networking firm had said only yesterday that it expected an agreement that would allow both firms use the iPhone name for their respective handheld communicators, the company filed a lawsuit after the newly rechristened Apple, Inc. apparently failed to sign the plan before an imposed Tuesday night deadline."

Europe and Asia are all on GSM are they not? And I remember the Telus sales person telling me that Europe cell technology is way ahead of NA (as far as transmitting data, etc). I could be wrong though.
Plus if it is something that people will want, I could see it forcing mobility companies to move to GSM or at least offer it to it's customers. Otherwise companies that don't adopt GSM, could loose alot of clients.

They're developing technology that will combine the two. Right now, CDMA is more secure, GSM is more convenient. The ideal would be both.

That's a pretty high stakes gamble for Apple, if they lose the right to call it iPhone, their entire marketing plan is shot. I do agree that cisco sat and waited for the chance to jump all over this just for publicity. Doesnt anyone take business ethics classes?

And the initial article I linked said:
Quote:
It claimed that Apple approached the company in 2001 about acquiring or licensing the rights to the name and continued to do so up to several times last year. It said it negotiated with Apple "in good faith" and sent an agreement for Apple to sign on Tuesday, following Apple's announcement.
|
They'll come to some sort of an agreement but I'm guessing it will cost a little more today than it would have a week ago.
