HBO will definitely need another mega hit.
Westworld was probably what they banked on but it got stupid, fast. Season 2 was horrible and left little hope for improvement.
I'd be surprised if it makes it to season 4.

Barry, Insecure, Bill Maher & others are all good shows but they're not the blockbuster drama HBO needs. Maybe Watchmen will be good.

To each their own I guess.
I was pretty let down and from what I've read ratings went down from season 1 too.

Post-Sopranos, HBO not bleeding subscribers | Article [AMP] | Reuters https://www.reuters.com/article/tele...33120620071125

PROGRAMMING STRUGGLES

Since losing "Sopranos," HBO has been bombarded with bad buzz, from the flop of the series' time-slot replacement, "John From Cincinnati," to only modest returns on other new shows like "Tell Me You Love Me." Such returning veterans as "Entourage" and "Big Love" showed little growth.

You would think that Martin would have had some creative control over seasons 7 and 8, particularly the last season of the series.

Unless he totally distanced himself from Benioff and Weiss.

I can’t believe he would have just let this happen.

Sounds as if GRRM gave them the final outcomes but little else. He’s also said that he rarely plots out his books beforehand, but plots as he writes. Hence the sprawl in his books, and his inability to help the show get from point A to point Z.

To me, the last two books were pretty “unfinishable” anyway. The number of outstanding side stories is just massive.

Wait, he has two more books to write?

I don't see that happening. When was the last one released?

I meant the last two books he finished in the series. There’re a lot of side plots. Feels like he needs another four or five to finish the series. Seems unlikely!

Woops - never answered your question. Last book was in 2011, and before that 2005. There are supposedly two more books coming, but Winds of Winter has been delayed like five times now.

HBO is also advancing the spin-offs much too slow. GoT will end and there will be nothing new for a few years which will result in a massive loss of subscribers.

And there is nothing else coming that is remotely close.

Amazon has the Middle Earth series coming, Netflix has tons of stuff coming, Disney has their stuff coming and HBO has nothing.

Most of the older stuff you don't even need Crave+, just regular Crave.

A good article detailing exactly why the last episode was so bad, and a new low for the series

^ I cannot disagree with a single one of those criticisms. It's sloppy writing at its worst.

I'm told that you can still enjoy the show if you treat it as turn your brain off hour, full of dragon zombie magic sex gore spectacle. as long as that's your expectation then you won't find much better on TV or film.

for those that can't accept that, it's because Game of Thrones used to be turn your brain on hour. that's why it's so fun going back to the early seasons repeatedly and picking up on nuances, clues and details that were missed the first or even second time. I just feel that with these recent seasons, what you see initially is pretty much all there is to it, and the replay value is considerably lower.

I think part of the problem is the show is clearly working toward an end game.

They shouldn't.

The show just started without the traditional introductory opening. The pilot was like a season premier not a series premier. Really, the series finale should be treated like a season finale.

What makes (made?) Game of Thrones great was that it was written as an infinite story. You know John Aaryn was important, as was Rhaegar Targaryen, Arthur Dayne, etc. But we don't get to know them. They're talked about like any other character but predecease the narrative.

The show should end with the aftermath of this round of the Game of Thrones, as the victors become bored and complacent, the new players start to emerge and set in motion the next round of the game.

Good post. I totally agree. Would like to see resolution of the battle for the throne in the next episode and then the last episode dedicated to aftermath and, as you say, planting the seeds for future conflicts, future narratives, future rounds of the game of thrones.

Yeah, I think the big thing with the show concluding will be if it feels like a closing or just another turn of the wheel, to borrow language from the show. I hope it's left somewhat open ended?

are we supposed to be rooting against Mad Queen Dany? cause after spending 6 seasons painstakingly acquiring dragons, allies, friends and armies in Essos, she's lost the majority of those in very short order. I'm kinda pissed off for her too and wouldn't mind a fair amount of fiery revenge.

Really has any long and successful show ended on a high? Certainly Breaking Bad didn't.

Good question. Neither did the Wire. I can't really think of one.

I’ve been binge watching the Wire and that last season and ending was a huge let down.
