That sucks. It’s a beautiful plane.

After watching Ice Pilots, I didn't think Buffalo Air is capable of writing off an aircraft. The mechanic will curse and swear and then put it back together.

Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet down at Moscow Sheremetyevo airport. Does not look good, but some reports saying all passengers and crew got out.

https://twitter.com/wildwildmoscow/s...958178304?s=21

Edit: Reports coming directly from Aeroflot indicate there are victims.

Hard to imagine everyone got out, that plane is almost fully engulfed.

Reports now stating at least 40 on board have died. This video of the landing is alarming to say the least.

The plane was engulfed in flames and people took time to grab their carry on before evacuating. No wonder so many died.

To remedy this, the first thing that comes to mind is electronic locks for the overhead bins, with the exception of those containing safety equipment. Much like how the electronic window shades on the 787 can be overridden by the crew so that one knob doesn't wake everybody up. Plane gets parked and is chocks in, FA hits the button and unlocks all the bins.

Maybe I am alone on this, but I really think this is more likely to be some kind of kind of gross prank than an airplane jettisoning its load while near the city.

Do aircraft actually unload the bathroom contents while in flight, and who is in charge of that?

If they did, it would be awful crappy of them.

Fun fact: Crews landing to the north at Tokyo-Narita are required to lower the landing gear by around 12 mile final (the shoreline, approximately) in order to prevent “ice chunks” from falling to the ground from the wheel well (last believed to have occurred some time in the 40’s from a DC-3).

From my first hand experience this definitely still happens today. I can't say it was from the wheel wells in particular but ice still falls off planes on occasion.

The Calgary Airport picked up the repair bill.

No doubt! Is more so just amusing because the Japanese elected to dictate a procedure to prevent it from happening (and the DC-3 scenario is when it was last believed to have happened in that area).

Flew into JFK on Monday and when pulling into the terminal I looked out and saw 3 A380s at the gates!

Spoiler for size.

Spoiler!

Wow, this came out of nowhere this morning:

WestJet is being acquired by Onyx for $5 billion. Will operate as a private entity going forward.

https://blog.westjet.com/westjet-to-...uired-by-onex/

Quote:
Today we announced we have entered into a definitive agreement that provides for our acquisition in an all-cash transaction. Under the terms of the agreement, Onex Corporation (“Onex”)(TSX: ONEX) and its affiliated funds will acquire all outstanding shares of WestJet for $31.00 per share, after which WestJet will operate as a privately-held company.

Quote:
“Since our first flight in 1996, WestJet has been singularly focused on providing better options for the Canadian travelling public and this transaction retains that commitment,” said Clive Beddoe, WestJet’s Founder and Chairman. “I am particularly pleased that WestJet will remain headquartered in Calgary and will continue to build on the success that our 14,000 WestJetters have created.

Wow, that's a surprise. No more "I care because I'm an owner" going forward, I suppose...

In my opinion this makes little sense. I'm not sure why the board would accept this offer. I wonder if the Government will approve this deal. I'm assuming that will be the most difficult process in this acquisition.

Edit: I didn't realize that Onex was a Canadian firm so the regulatory approval might be somewhat less difficult than I initially expected. I thought they were a foreign entity which would have created issues for sure.

Owner's Care was essentially eliminated about a year and a half ago. Morale has been at an all time low for a long time and now it will plummet even more. There will be a mass exodus for sure.
