Peters needs to give a friendly ring to Mr. D Sutter on how he can bring his players intensity up close to the playoff. Hindsight, may be they should have rested all those players once they clinched the 1st in the Conference. Those players looked like they are too rested and into stale territory.
|
Perhaps no urgency but what I saw was a COL that was just a better skating team overall. It's not to say CGY is a slow team but man for man COL was faster.
To that end CGY tried to play a way where they weren't getting burned on the regular. So they played very conservative they actually looked like last year's team.
What do you do when you go up against a team faster than you? You try to make sure you stay above them and have guys back. You don't be as aggressive because if the play goes the other way you get beat up ice.
CGY had to play an uncharacteristic style - cautious - it took away from their identity because they, to me, took on another identity - safe. You can have all the urgency in the world but if the other team can skate you out of the rink it doesn't matter.
Peters was right - the team has to get faster and bigger (play bigger too).

Flames definitely need more tenacity.
I could see all of Jankowski, Neal, Czarnik, Frolík, Brodie, and Stone (cannot remain healthy) in danger of losing their jobs.
It would be great to see Mangiapane and Dubé have bigger roles next season with Pospisil and Yelesin challenging for regular spots. I wonder what kind of energy Zagidulin will bring to the team.

Pospisil? He played in the USHL last year, a league that's not too far off from the AJHL. I like the prospect, but he is a project. Expect him to spend at least a minimum of 2 full seasons in the AHL before challenging for a spot on the big club.

Yeah before we all get ahead of ourselves we need to realize the very remote chance that guys like Yelesin, Zagidulin, etc will be on the big club next season. Chances are super slim they will be with the Flames.
Intellectual honesty, etc.

Tired of reading all the negative about Monahan. Tired of reading all the excuses for Gaudreau. He's a lazy player who only functions between our blue line and the opposition goal. He's a defensive liability. If Monahan is the problem then move Gaudreau to another line. If a lack of toughness in his linemates is the problem then move him to another line. He's a constant whiner. Whoever plays centre for him has to be first forward back, get control of the puck (or help to get control), pass the puck half way up the ice to JG and then catch up so JG can make a return pass. It's time to give Monahan a chance to play his game not Gaudreau's. Hell, for that matter move Gaudrea to centre where he doesn't have to go into the corners and make him be the first man back.

I’ll say it again. You can pass the puck faster than MacKinnon can skate.
Colorado closed on Calgary quickly when the Flames had possession, and anticipated their plays.
Bad decision making and lack of pace were killers.

This is a good assessment. Over and above this it is clear that the Avs buried their chances when they had them. Alternatively, the Flames floundered their opportunities and it cost them. The turn of events in both overtimes illustrate this point well. Game three however was a total write off.

Get Tkachuk in there as well. His skating and speed is pretty atrocious.

Oh man, do they need to work on their skating. It is not just foot speed though. Neal was coasting many times. I can understand not having the speed but still skating hard (Tkachuk is an example, even Monahan to an extent), but so many times Neal would just be gliding out there. I don't know if his fitness was up there either.

What exactly is that? Does anyone think Monahan could center a couple of depth wingers and elevate them? That's just not his game. He needs to play with talented wingers that can feed him the puck in scoring position.

But he doesn't need to carry Gaudreau on his back, he doesn't need to carry the play so Gaudreau can perform. It's time to give him a couple of wingers his speed who can feed him the puck. Let' see how JG does if he has to work instead of skating all over the ice with the puck. How the hell does anyone know where to be with his all over the place wanderings. Some of you expect Monahan to be first man back, control the puck, carry it into the offensive zone, dig in the corners, feed JG the puck and be in place to make the shot. Ridiculous.

I wonder if Calgary might look at sending Neal back to Nashville in a deal involving Kyle Turris.

Hope not. Turris is also coming off a bad season and is under contract for longer and for a bigger cap hit.

We were so predictable in what we did. Rather break out, power play yada yada. Give them credit they did there homework. We didn’t change or adjust or compete at same level. No Give a xxxx factor

Monahan's game is finishing set ups, that's literally it. What else do you think he has that Gaudreau is holding him back from?

lol wat? when has monahan ever carried gaudreau on his back or the play at all? he doesn't exactly set the world on fire with non-gaudreau wingers.
gaudreau carrying the puck into the offensive zone and buying time for his linemates to get open isn't "work" now? and monahan standing still in the low slot is? lmao

Conroy was on 960 this morning, obviously talked about the playoffs. Didn't mention names specifically, but said that they will evaluate the core group from the 3 playoff years. Seems like he was strongly hinting at Monahan.

Which is hilarious given Monahan produced in two of those three playoff years. Gaudreau in only one.
That said, Gaudreau obviously gives us more. If you feel you can move Lindholm to C and acquire a good RW, then you consider it.
