Are the Sharks now going to take the Avs to school exactly the way the Flames should have but didn't because of...who knows.
I hope not, because it'll make MacKinnon going one man wrecking crew on the Flames in 5 games look worse.
I mean the Sharks' rather porous defense managed to limit them to a respectable 27 shots. Goes to show it takes quite a collective faceplant to allow 50+ shots consecutively.
Sharks shouldn't even be in round 2. The NHL officiating is just a joke, and it was proven in round 1.
That being said, I think it will be decent series.
Not going to watch much of the playoffs, as the refs have totally ruined this game for me.
Flame me if you want, but that's where I stand on this league atm.
Flames beat them in Game 1. Let's give it a game before we make our decisions on how good or bad they are. They clearly made adjustments, let's see if this time those adjustments will be advantageous.
Although it almost seems like common sense now, to clog up the Nzone against their 1 line of dominance. They either dump it or get leveled. Dont think we see that at all in our series. D would just completely back off, which could have worked but didn't because of the weak back pressure.
Yes, if Johnny had a better coach he would have scored on those 3 breakaways in game 5.
And they still lose the game 5-4 getting eliminated in five games. It's pretty obvious Peters had his lunch handed to him by Bednar. That said it was his first time in the playoffs and he will learn from this.

Different game IF Johnny actually scored.

We really gave that series away, didn't we.
The Avs are who we thought they were

Oh hey, it turns out that forechecking to disrupt a breakout makes it harder to gain speed through the neutral zone. If only someone had thought of that sooner.

Maybe, maybe not. Even if Johnny scores what indication was there that the Flames were going to make the defensive adjustments necessary to come back in the series? The point is that the Flames made the Avs look like the regular season Lightning and the Sharks made them look like the regular season Avs. I like Peters and think he's the right coach for this team but it's totally fine to point hout he got outcoached in his first playoff series.

Let’s see how the Avs do in the next game before writing them off. They’re coming off a week to rest on their laurels - kind of like the Flames coasting for a week or more before the start of their series, except the Flames didn’t get a wake up call in the first game of their playoff series. We’ll see if the Avs we saw in round one can return to form. Or maybe the quickness of the Sharks forwards can pressure the Avs’ defense better than the Flames. Certainly the Sharks’ defense handled the Avs’ forecheck better than any of the Flames defense (including Giordano)

I fully expect the length and physicality of the Knights series to eventually take a toll on the Sharks so I could see them fade as the series progresses. I just think the Avs are not very good and that the Sharks overall talent advantage will be enough to get them to the next round where they could run out of gas. I know a lot of fans are hoping the Avs do well so as not to make the Flames look worse but I would rather they be embarrassed from getting smoked by a mediocre team than to shrug their shoulders that they just ran into a team of destiny.

I'm certain the Avs will get exposed as a one line team this series, San Jose is way deeper and way better, just as the Flames were (on paper). The problem is the Flames allowed Mackinnon to get in their heads and instead of remembering they were the top dogs in the conference they turned into shrinking violets and got scared. What we witnessed was a complete lack of leadership from the top players on the team. I doubt the Sharks have the same reaction.
And as much as I love Gio his fawning over Mackinnon at the end of the series pretty much displayed the issue. The Flames forgot to bring a pitbull mentality to the playoffs and were more than comfortable to let one great player dictate their fates.

They apologized to Vegas' GM for it too, and sent those refs home for the summer, which shows that they knew they screwed up.
Even though the Flames didn't deserve their series, the late phantom calls probably cost them the two games they led late in too.

A bit unfair to Peters. Look at how our three pairs fared in game 5 in terms of CF%
The tactical adjustments WERE made by game 5. What he couldn't do was
- get his second pair to start executing those adjustments the way his first and third pair had.
- get one more strong game out of Smith. Smith failed to make any big saves in game 5 whether on the PK or ES. It was probably too much to ask a 37 year old to play five tough games in nine nights but he had little choice
- get Gaudreau to finish just one grade A chance, even on a penalty shot and two breakaways

LOL better late than never right? I would think after game 2 (the OT goal alone was the epitome of the series) these adjustments should have been made.

I didn't actually go that deep with my comment, my point was that you can't call it a 5-4 game even if Johnny scored 3 times from those breakaways, different game.
Should of just dropped back into the old 1-3-1 or anything to clog it. up. They were using the same tactics all series and had no ideas. They were dumping and chasing over and over as well although the Avs were faster and beat them to every puck. Peters looked like a rookie and I hope he learns from it.
The top 4 defensive teams in the league advanced. We need to be fast but we need to be able to defend the neutral zone and give teams a rough ride as the rules are different in the post season. It's been proven time and time again. Our D is a bunch of powder puffs so teams will just walk around them when the whistles are put away.
