Yup, it's too bad we won't get to see Canada counter with Crosby and McDavid, who many consider as the two best players in the world, and other top Canadians like Tavares, Marner, Stamkos, Point, Subban, Johansen, Schefele, Gio, Mark Stone, and so many more. This could have been an Olympic caliber roster.

I am excited for Hanifin and Ryan to go as I hope they can really learn from the experience.

As for Gaudreau, for a guy that seems to constantly tail-off at the end of the season with his production.. I hope this can help him improve his fitness level or something.

Derek Ryan was a bronze medalist in last year's tournament where he scored 4G / 7pts, and Noah Hanifin was part of the 2017 squad.

The hockey world cup may have featured better players, but as has been said they bent over backwards trying to make that happen. Team "North America"? "Team Europe"? The international stage is supposed to be for National Teams not Frankenstein rosters. It also does nothing to grow the game in non-traditional hockey countries.

I love the World Championships and Olympics because anyone can win it. Those are large, truly international tournaments. Japan could win the World Championships. They'd have to advance from their current div, but it is all under the umbrella of a truly WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP.

I'm also a huge soccer fan, and love tournaments like the European Championships, Copa America, Gold Cup, FA Cup, African Cup of Nations, Asian Cup, etc. Those are also not best on best like soccer's World Cup, but they have a qualifying component and are inclusive of all countries. San Marino could win the Euros. I wouldn't bet on it, but it could happen

Great Britain can win the World Championship this year!

They have a guy Liam Kirk who plays junior for Peterborough.

Also the gold medal game will not end in a shootout this year.

Its 3-on-3 for 20 minute periods until somebody scores.

Canada announced their roster today, no Flames on it, but there are still 3 spots open. Likely if any Flames were going they would have been announced today.

So it's looking like it's Gaudreau/Hanifin/Ryan, Lindholm, and Frolik and that will probably be it.

Go USA! (until the semis, where you can lose horribly)

Pre tourney lines for USA vs Germany. Gaudreau listed as playing RW on a line with Larkin and Kreider, Hanifin playing right side, and Ryan playing LW.

Oh also USA Hockey apparently has inside information that the Flames have traded Hanifin to Vancouver.

Is that the depth chart? They are making Johnny play RW?

So who did we get in return for trading Hanifin to the Canucks?

Those are the lines for today's exhibition game per USA Hockey's official twitter account.

It'd be interesting to see how Johnny and Ryan play in those positions. Didn't get to see as much of Ryan on the wing last year as I expected and Johnny almost never plays the off-side.

It's going to be a little harder for Johnny to protect the puck as he enters the zone, although I've seen him cross to that side sometimes. He may actually get a better passing angle once he establishes himself in the zone. Peters should watch and see if it opens up any lineup possibilities.

I sure want to see how he plays with a speedster like Larkin (though I've seen him with McDavid and Mackinnon already).

This looks like a two horse tourney to me between the Americans and Russia. I give the Russians the edge because of goaltending. Why the US would not use Gaudreau and Kane together on a line is beyond me. I get spreading the offence out but those two together would be just about unstoppable.

I agree. They could have put Debrincat at RW on the 2nd line (he's great) and White to the third line and just slid all the LWs down a spot (and moved Ryan to 4th line RW - he's a right shot anyway). Or just put Ryan on the third line RW as his numbers and Whites are similar.

As an aside, Kazakhstan and Belarus have been promoted to next years tournament.

Korea could have made it back but they messed up and lost to relegated Lithuania.
