Regardless I would imagine the Flames need to add to make that deal happen anyway.
The Leafs need cap space and they will need a third line centre to replace Kadri. Plus Jankowski has some upside too and is a good penalty killer.

The Leafs have a lot of young forwards, but not much in the mold of a typical third line centre: a guy who is big and kills penalties but also has some offense in him. A lot of the Leaf's young forwards are offensive guys and wingers too. They had Tavares killing penalties as well in the playoffs, that's how much they were lacking in this area.

They don't need a C.

Petan & Gauthier are right there for 3L/4L duty

Also sorry everyone as I added to my previous post after some of you had replied.

What did Babcock complain most about when they got Muzzin?

I just don't see the Leafs as a landing spot for Brodie

Two AHL tweeners?

I know the season ended badly and we think all our players suck, but you don't seriously think Petan and Gauthier are the same player as Jankowski do you?

Jankowski put up 32 points last season in a third line role.

Gauthier and Petan didn't crack 20 points together.

Gauthier may be a decent 4th line centre, but there is no offense there. You want your third line centre to produce some offense.

Yeah, but he might not be there much longer.

They like Gauthier. And he's cheap. So is Petan. For a few years more, both of them.

Just as Leafs need RHed shots on D, we need RHed shots in our top 9.

We only have Lindholm.. dont see how others and Treliving wouldnt be wanting to target guys like Kapanen over anything else.

Having 8 lefties in our top 9 makes us easier to defend IMO

To add on to this - The Athletic interviewed a panel of coaches, players and execs. This was one of the quotes about Pittsburgh:
Quote:
One coach who knows Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford well said he anticipates a big offseason response to the disappointing end to this season.
“He’s not afraid to do anything,” the coach said.
How big are we talking?
“I think I wouldn’t be surprised if (Evgeni) Malkin or (Phil) Kessel are gone,” he said. “I think they have to turn the page and try something new. So those two guys would be pressure point guys to me.”

Was thinking about this even before rumours about Malkin being available....Monahan and Brodie for Malkin. I think he thrives as the clear #1 Centre.

Malkin strikes me as a guy who's in career coast mode at this point.

100%

I want players who haven’t won the cup yet. Or at least haven’t won multiple.

An article in the Athletic about the Pens pointed out that Malkin has a full NMC, he gave up significant dollars on his last contract to get it, and he has never given any indication he'd be willing to leave Pittsburgh. It also said Lemieux regrets moving Jagr back in the day and wants Malkin to retire a Penguin.

Yeah I don't think he's going anywhere as it's more likely Crosby and Malkin retire Penguins. If they ever do cross that road he's certainly not going to waive his NMC to go to Calgary.

Fine. If Malkin won't waive his NMC to come to Calgary, we'll take that Crosby fellow. I hear he's okay at hockey.

People on this board complain constantly that Janko is a very soft player who can only take face offs and kill penalties, but is otherwise bench worthy. He was many people's target to be bench during the playoffs.

But in trade discussions, he's just what the Leafs ordered as a big centre, typical third line centre in fact. Nice sales job.

That's an interesting take...don't the Flames have enough players that haven't had any post season success?

Malkin is one of the best. Would take him in a heart beat.
