i think Gio is too important to the team, certainly for next year... he sets the tone in the locker room, training, out in the community...he acts as the role model for the team and literally everyone on the team raves about him...
not saying never trade him, that may come up eventually, and it might even be Gio that wants that if the Flames start trending downwards.
its my preference he retires as a Flame, but in the world of professional sports that happens less and less often.

Price goes up for the Flames though, you would on turn ask for more than Kadri alone from the Leafs.

If I am Treliving I instantly hang up if they are offering Kadri for Hanifin. He might laugh at Dubas first before he does that. How about Nylander for Hamonic?

I suppose they could also buyout the final year of Marleau's contract and be okay too, so long as they don't plan on upgrading their D.
They could target Hanafin but I cant imagine Brad would do it.
Brodie is the only trade that makes sense here, and I still think Toronto bites.
I dont want to trade him either, but honestly doing it this year will net the biggest return we'll ever see. With that being said if there's an offer that jumps out at you I think you have to seriously consider it. If its Toronto, we're asking for Nylander to start IMO. Cant imagine a scenario where its even remotely possible, but much like the Iginla saga, if we hold on too long the value is just going to decrease until he's worth pennies on the dollar so you have to be okay with that.
|
I'm not following the Leafs cap situation too closely, but I think the odd men out this summer are Nylander, Marleau, & Gardiner.
Kadri outperform's his contract value. He's the least of Torontos worries. A 50-60 point 30 goal C is worth 5-6 million, maybe more?, on the open market?
If I'm Dubas, there are a number of guys I move before Kadri.

Gardiner is a UFA isn't he? So he's already gone. I don't think anybody wants Marleau at that price tag. Nylander I could see being moved for sure though. It's unfortunate he had such a subpar year. His value was highest last summer.

I was thinking you aren't resigning Gardiner, so that frees up whatever he's making now & whatever he's going to be making. Consider it cap space that is now available. Marleau could be bought out & Nylander traded. More than a few, Friedman Kyperos to name a couple, have said they expect this season to be Nylanders last with the Leafs.
All these are plausible, or likely, to happen before the Leafs deal Kadri who is on a good to great value contract. If they do move him, it's going to be for a significant good value contract coming back. TJ Brodie is not that. Hanafin could be, but I say no if I'm Treliving.

Optics will look very bad for the Leafs if they trade Nylander after Dubas promised him he wouldn’t. Gotta do what you gotta do though and Nylander would get them a top 4 D for sure.

Sounds like Rutherford in Pittsburgh could be making some changes before next season.

The leafs cap situation is a mess. All the talk has been around marner and Matthews for good reason but the cap issues could result in a few salary dumps.
Kapanen had 20 goals and 44 points. Bridge deal could be signed but those numbers could lead to close to 4 mil
Johnsson 20 goals and 43 points. Another possible close to 4 mil deal
Hainsey led the team in plus minus. 38 years old could sign for cheap but still could be 2 mil or you let him walk
Gardiner probably going to leave too but him and hainsey out could lead to an even worse d corp
They could dump Horton's contract and an increase to 83 cap would give them 12 mil to spend but if Marner gets 9 that's 3 mil and your losing 2 d men that contribute and needs to be replaced with league minimum players
For me Kadri kapanen nylander johnnson all should be available and 2 probably go for guys that are cheap contracts. Leafs need to be looking at trades similar to domi for galchenyuk when you get cheaper player with similar upside. Trades that probably look bad on paper in the moment even though I was a huge fan of domi trade from day 1

Marleau is their Neal but signed for only one more year.
He can’t be easily moved.

I would imagine the Leafs consider buying him out.

The only Leaf I trade for is Kapanen. That's it, that's all.

I don't think his contract allows that, from what I've seen

He was a 35 age contract, so buyout does not affect cap hit.
He is owed a big bonus, so perhaps his contract can be moved to a team wanting to hit the cap floor cheaply.

Marleau has their balls in a vice if he really wanted to.
NMC, so he can't be traded without his consent, can't even be sent to the Marlies. If he's bought out his cap hit is still on the books fully and he'll still make ~3.8M of the 4.25M owing due to bonus structure. Even if he just admirably retires they are stuck with the 6M+ cap hit.
Better hope he's willing to do them a favour or gets a sudden case of equipment related allergies.

Kessel was rumoured to have interest in the Coyotes because of his strong relationship with former Penguins assistant Rick Tocchet. I think Kessel would do wonders in adding credibility to that team.
