Babcock probably gets next year because it's still pretty expensive to fire him, but he's lost six straight series in the first round. He's definitely an overrated coach.

I don't see who else out there would do much better. Babcock isn't great, but to use him as a scapegoat because he didn't give Matthews an extra 3 shifts, is laughable. The GM put together a team that have 2 puck moving dmen. The GM has 4 guys on D who should be bottom pairings. That's not to say it's fully the GM's fault either, but it's a variety of things that come into play with sports. Those two are on the management primarily. The Leafs didn't play that well in the third and that you can blame the players for.

Really? You don't think Barry Trotz could do more with that roster? I think there's quite a few coaches that could do no worse and probably some better. He's rigid in his love of rolling four lines and puzzling line combinations. He's basically Glen Gulutzan with past success.

Wonder if this comes down to who Shanahan prefers. Dubas or Babcock.

Exactly, who are they gonna hire? Vigneault is gone, Q is gone. Cooper has been extended and Tort isn't going anywhere. Oh, may be they can hire Eakins?

Sheldon Keefe. He was with Dubas in St. Cats. Then Dubas brought him to the Marlies and they won the Calder Cup. I'm sure Dubas would love to fire Babcock and bring in his guy. It's just a matter of the people above him giving him the OK.
The majority of Leaf fans would love to have Keefe.

Wouldn't it a be a bit risky hiring a rookie coach? The Toronto media will eat him alive, no?

A little but he has coached half the players on this roster. He knows the organization well. The Marlies and Leafs work very close with each other.
This Marlies team isn't as stacked as last year. I say if he takes them on a deep run they fire Babcock and bring in Keefe.
Babcock probably gets brought in by a new team like Buffalo quickly. If the Oilers excoach can get rehired so quick Babcock would have no problem.

The question of replacing Babcock in the end comes down to how the players feel about him. If the players aren't keen on him I think it's time to cut bait and start fresh next season. No reason wasting another year with this core.

If Queneville was still available then Babcock would be on much shakier ground IMO.

I think hiring these big name coaches is usually a mistake. For every Trotz there are countless examples of it not working.

Well they actually have 25 million reasons. More if the rest of the staff is replaced, as is the norm.
I know MLSE has boatloads of money at their disposal, but are they really willing to pay someone that kind of cash not to work for them? Then add another 20 million or more for the new guy and his assistants?
When you add in that slate of defencemen the coaching staff is saddled with....well as the saying goes, its hard to make chicken soup out of chicken ####, and then complain when it doesn't happen.

I don't think Q being in Florida has any impact at all
I think dubas and Babcock don't get along and I think Matthews and Babcock don't get along.
This is the excuse Dubas needs and he will bring in his own coach within a couple weeks of the season ending.
