Let's remember that if it wasn't for a goal post in game 3 of the Blue Jackets and Capitals last year, we likely would have had the Capitals completely dismantled and Ovechkin still seen as a perennial playoff choker instead of Stanley Cup champs.
It's a game of inches, Flames win game 2 and the Avalanche may have capitulated. Let's see what they learn from this for next year.

Frolik on whether this core is capable of winning it all:
“Our first line had an awesome regular season but in the playoffs it’s a little different. I think the core has it, I think they can do it. I think we need more bigger bodies and the meanness.” #Flames

Exactly so what happened to him the last four games!!!!

Good for Frolik, has the balls to call it like it is.

Sure as long as he has a look in the mirror also. He wasn't exactly productive.

It’s interesting because size is the last reason I’d give for our loss to the Avs.
Also interesting in that it’s like he’s recognizing that players like him aren’t the solution.

Hmm, the "meanness and bigger bodies" comments are interesting. Should the Flames go for a Semenko type player? Useless offensively but go near Johnny and get pummeled.
It might work.

Agreed on your first point, I don’t see how a big bodied guy wouldn’t have been more then just another person for McKinnon to skate around.
I don’t mind Frolik, but at this stage I think he brings value in the 2.5 million range, so he’s overpriced for what I think a like-for-like replacement would/should cost. While he’s not ‘the problem’...he’s probably not part of the solution either.

I wouldn't hold it against you if you didn't make more but just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos. Often as summer is nearing its end and I'm starting to miss Flames hockey I will play one or two of your vids to get my hockey fix and carry me through until the season

Take it how you want, but the way I see it, the bigger bodies comment means the Flames need guys that play with size, toughness. Monahan, Jankowski etc are big bodies that play soft like Guadreau and shy away from anything resembling contact or a battle along the boards. I don't think he means they literally need to get bigger....

They also need guys who can bury a wide open chance in OT and not choke...also mediocre players NOT complaining about playing time through their agent would be good.
That being said a big center that can drive play would be a major improvement...

Honestly, I think we need to make a big move to solidify ourselves in the playoffs. This group clearly isn't going to do it, we don't have a "drive the line" type player in our top 6 and some teams have 2.
The only way we're going to acquire that is by trading someone big. I'm hoping for another big splash at the draft, unlikely but I hope we make a tough call that pays off like the CGY-CAR trade.
|
I honestly don't think softer hockey is the main thing...not being the only elite offensive talent on the team is huge. Other team is not just keying on him, won't be on the only guy on the ice that can carry the puck ect.

Doesn't add up. How did the Flames end up with 8 more penalty minutes than the Avs, while "shying away from anything resembling contact or board battles"?

Gio also can't say anything about potential roster changes because then it looks like he has a hand in it. That's a bad look as you don't want the impression in the locker room that one player can meddle with the roster.

So Hamonic was asked to go the Worlds and decline but Gio hasn’t been asked yet?
