I was looking at Neal's contract last week, its not as bad as Lucic because that one is based on bonuses. So even if the Oilers buy out Lucic there will anywhere from 3.5 to 5.5 million still on the cap for the next few years.
If the Flames were to buy out Neal, the cap hit goes down to 1.9 million for the next 4 years. It certainly looks like that may have been a fatal flaw in the build of this years team. Tha being said I am happy the Flames made no acquisitions at the trade deadline. They are certainly more than 1 or 2 players away from challenging for the cup.

Neal, playing RW, then takes one of the most over the top float around glides I’ve ever seen. Even for a guy just finishing a backcheck, it was absurd. He floats down into the far corner and swoops back up ice along the left wall.
He’s playing RW, we are up 1 goal, don’t have possession of the puck in our own end, and he’s blowing the zone on the off wing. Sit your ass down for a few games.

After reading that last line I thought you were writing about Gaudreau.

Neal also took two dumb penalties last night, the refs just didn’t call them. His trip was the exact same play as the one Backlund got sent to the box for
Indefensible that he wasn’t scratched. Indefensible that he was on the ice in the third protecting a lead. Downright inexplicable that he was on the ice in overtime.

To me it is a no brainer, it will come down to Treliving’s pride vs logic.
Also potential compliance buyouts during the next lockout need to be factored into the decision.
Either way Neal should at best be in Stockton for a full year like Matt Moulson was this year. Hopefully Dube sends him a nice text when he clears waivers.

If only it was for the next 4 years. No way you can buy him out already.

In terms of cap percentage next year that’s ~2.3 percent and that percentage is only going to decrease over the 8 years. Small price to pay to get Neal off the ice.

At that point, Treliving needs to be fired. Can't have two big buyouts happening in consecutive years.

He 100% eventually will. The question is when.
Neal isn’t playing out this contract. That’s absurd

At some point, the sample size becomes to large to chalk it all up to bad luck. This organization has severely underdelivered and let down its fan base.

Pretty much every fan can say that in any sport. You either support a team win or lose, or you don't.

Honestly, I feel like Neal would welcome the buyout. I think he is also regretting signing in Calgary and both parties are not happy. Doesn't seem like he has had much fun at all this year and I may be wrong but when is the last time James Neal was at a community event?
Wouldn't be surprised if he asks for a trade (I get no one wants him) or they agree to terminate the contract (like Jagr).

They didn’t get those for the last draft so I doubt they will now. Do you mean new CBA? Maybe

Powerplay Quarterback

This is a minority opinion, but although I wish he played a tougher game, I don't think Jankowski's been as bad as others on this board do. He's not slow as some people claim, and his penalty killing role is usually pretty good. I actually think Neal's lack of speed and his inability to keep play going or bury good passes in the offensive zone is a big part of Jankowski's apparent poor performance.

He's not walking away from 20 million bucks.
He might welcome a trade to Phoenix though.

No way that's happening, he might not get another contract. He's not walking away from $25MM
