Just 33 minutes in icetime over the first two games - compared to Backlund's 47, and Mackinnon's 51.5.. I understand that linematching is a key factor here but Johhny is the straw that stirs the drink for this club offensively and he is not getting enough of an opportunity. If that' means going head to head with Mackinnon thats what you do

We are not winning this series unless our top line produces. Peters need to get them going.
The problem with putting the Johnny line out there more is that right now it's a one man show. Lindholm has played pretty well and shown a surprising amount of physical edge but his offense has completely dried up. Even though Monahan had a goal in game 2, he was mostly invisible the rest of the time and often looks completely disengaged. This leads to Johnny trying to do too much. He ends up attempting to dangle through the entire opposing team or doing a button hook just inside the blueline waiting for options then ultimately loses the puck. I certainly don't think Johnny is the problem but until his linemates (particularly Monahan) can up their game, I don't know if putting them out there more is the answer.

Having to go through adversity is a good thing. Under Peter's the Flames have been able to overcome adversity so far. I bet the Flames get going right off the bat tonight and don't look back.

If Monahan can't get back to being a force in the high slot, this line isn't going to turn things around. Dating back to the last 15 or so games, he's just not battling enough and seems content to allow himself to be kept to the outside. Granted, I think this is more a factor of the rest of the league upping their intensity and Monahan having no response.....It's his ability to draw coverage and create space that made Johnny and Lindholm so effective at times this season. We saw a little glimpse of fire when he barreled into the slot to score last game, hopefully that is a step in the right direction.

This is totally accurate and concerning. If the Avs continue slashing Johnny (and there's no reason to think the refs are gonna start calling it) and Monahan continues to skate like he's got cement in his pants, having them on the ice even more is not gonna help. My other big concern is how Tkachuk is doing after that big hit he took in the first few minutes of Game 2. He clearly struggled after that.

I do trust Peters though - and I think we won't hesitate to give lesser guys more ice time if he thinks it will produce more scoring chances. Fingers crossed for tonight - my stomach is already flip-flopping..... ugh

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
Calgary native Cale Makar, who won Hobey Baker Award on Friday and lost NCAA Championship Game on Saturday, set to make #Avalanche debut tonight. Looks like Samuel Girard is out and he’ll play with Patrik Nemeth. #CGYvsCOL #StanleyCup

This is intriguing. I haven't followed him enough of late but I assume he's looked good in practice and they feel he's an upgrade.

I really hope the forwards burn the kid and expose him. Feels like playing with fire tossing a unknown into a pressure filled game.

He has been on the ice for like 15 mins in his first NHL practice. If they are putting him in it is because they feel like he can make the jump right away.

Girard is a main piece of the Avs. Hes not being scratched he has been injured by a Bennett check. You probably missed it being at the game.

I'm betting he looks good in his first game because of sheltering and adrenalin. He will be more exposed over a few games.

I'm honestly wondering if this changes on the road, simply because of the Avs having last change. At home, you hard match 3M against Mackinnon & Co, and it was working quite well, as 3M was playing great. Exhibit "A" on that front is the fact that Bednar kept playing Rantanen on line 2 rather than reuiniting the best offensive line in hockey so that he had at least one major weapon away from the Flames' shut down unit. But you're effectively in "reaction" mode at that point, which means that if MacKinnon plays a ton, 3M is going to get the bulk of the ice time.

On the road, you can't react - they have to react to you. If you just throw Gaudreau out there, you're probably going to get a lot of MacKinnon vs. Gaudreau (I'm guessing that's the matchup Bednar wants), and in that circumstance I suspect we see more chances both ways and more of a chance for Johnny & Co. to get into the series.

Of course, they could just get overmatched, but you're the top line on the best team in the conference. These are the situations wherein you have to step it up if you want to win a playoff series.

Yeah I know but I'm really surprised they are inserting him in the lineup so quickly. I know the Flames did a similar thing with Iginla years back but breaking in a young defenseman is a little more difficult.

Bennett got him. He's their best LD

I know when they were initially speculating Makar joining the team, the thought was to go 11 F and 7D. I wonder if that changes with Girard out.

Like Warrener said this morning, throw him there. No time to think, just play.

Boomer compared him to Karlsson. Will be interesting to see him tonight.

Oh my god. No, you cannot claim this.

And while I am confident about people seeing what they want to see in the face of counter evidence I really do not believe that is what is happening here. There is plenty of actual data which supports an alternative narrative about Game #1 than what you are promoting.

Ryan Graves looks like the next guy on the depth chart but he only appeared in 26 games so I guess they don't have much to lose by plugging in a rookie for his first game.
