Burkie on HC and just threw out this stat.
When he was still with the club last season, his analytics guys did some research on how many fewer hits the defensemen took because of Mike Smiths ability to play the puck/stop hard rims etc.
By Dec. 1 last year, Flames Dmen had taken 120-140 fewer hits than other teams dmen simply because of his puck handling. Extrapolate that out over an enoire season where Smith plays say 45 games...that would be the equivalent of 250-300 fewer times they have to take a hit r handle a puck in traffic.
Anyone question that Smith shouldnt do what he does any longer?

Gord Stellick just told the story of Lanny McDonald when Burke was talking about Bennett and his fabulous moustache. McDonald was also a #4 pick and his first few seasons were not great offensively. McDonald added the moustache after a couple years and started playing on a line with Darryl Sittler and Erol Thompson and the rest is history.
Cool story.

The one it really reminded me of is Vernon’s save on Tanti. That one came after the save on Smyl, and after Vernie had made 2-3 great glove saves already (fast forward to 5:05):
Thank-you for that! The Smyl breakaway save and the toe/skate save were exceptional!
Vernon earned his place in the rafters of the Dome in those 6 minutes of highlights. Most impressive display of clutch goaltending in Flames history. Even Kipper would agree I think.
I remember that night so well as a kid in Saskatchewan. Further cemented my passion for the Flames.
The dominant Flames got 2 enormous skate saves and at least 3 big glovehand stops from Vernon in the most pressure back moment in franchise history to stay alive to go on to the Cup.
Kipper's play in game 6 against Wings in 04 is probably the next best display of goaltending in Flames history.
In the off-season we should have a poll to figure out which games were the best goaltending displays in Flames franchise history.
Smith last night may not crack the top 10 best goaltending performances but may be the most surprising display of excellence in some time, if ever!
Who would have thought he still had that in him after his trying season!

That can’t be true. Some stats guy on this board said he had stats that proved Smith’s puck handling has no benefit. I take the word of the guy who did this research from his basement over the word of the guy who gets paid by the team.

Teams pay people to do nothing else but watch hundreds of hours of video that they have access to from every single NHL game, and to make these sorts of assessments. I am not terribly surprised when basement bloggers fail to reproduce similar results.

Curious. Who did the TV broadcast for the game on CBC?
On NBC Sports we got Gord Miller and Ray Ferraro.
Edit: just watched the highlights this morning. Jealous that we don’t get Ball/Cassie here. Though I don’t mind Miller/Ferraro either.
I started watching the CBC feed but then decided to switch and watch the NBC sports feed. I enjoyed having Miller/Ferraro. Was hoping for Cuthbert though. I’ll probably stick with the US feed but definitely miss hearing Ball.
I did switch back to CBC during the intermission as I like the Panel and Burke.

I could be wrong but I thought the stats provided on this side were for possession not for hits on defenseman. The former and the latter both make sense.
