This is becoming quite a story.
The Italians badmouthed the Iraqi government and are lobbying to get a worldwide ban on executions. The Iraqis fired back with something along the lines of "his trial was longer than Mussolini's".
Them's fightin' words!
It really was amateur hour though. They let some random guy just tape it? Nice work.

I've always wondered why the Italian flag was exactly the same as the swiss, minus the cross...

I just watched the whole video.
I do find it a little troubling that Iraq's justice system is full of supporters (as well as officials) in leather jackets and ski masks, as well as openly supporting a terrorist (Muqtada).
If this is the new "free" democratic Iraq, then the future is looking pretty bleak.

I could be wrong but I thought the executioners were amateurs. The ski masks are for anonymity.

Still, I would expect them to have some kind of uniforms and professional attitude if they were hired by the state to bring about justice. I'm sure the executioners in most countries do.
They looked and acted like a bunch of terrorists.

Is anyone surprised by this? The only thing that I'm even remotely surprised about is that France didnt get to it first.
In case anyone wasnt paying attention another upity yet ineffectual european country w/ a deplorable human rights record has just reminded us how socially enlightened they truly are....

That's the thing. Saddam is dead boo hoo, tough break and all that, but it looks like a snuff film.
Imagine being in that room though. Wow. It made me cold just watching. There was enough hate in that room to fuel a rocketship to the moon.

Who made who, though? That's what thirty years under the thumb of the self-proclaimed "founder of Modern Iraq" does. A generation of thug rule. Not exactly a kinder, gentler nation in his wake.
Gotta hand it to Saddam though for taking it like a man. No emotional breakdowns, no pooping of pants as he was being led to the gallows. Hell, when they were heckling him, he was dishing it right back at 'em.

Yeah, he seemed to take it like a man at the final moments. He lost a lot of points though when he went into hiding and was found looking like a homeless guy in that spyder hole.
Too bad Bush didn't take him up on that challenge to fight mano a mano. Would have been great TV and maybe averted a war.

The execution stopped at nothing short of an absolute charade.
It's quite clear what message is being sent, with the trial, execution, taunts, when it took place (Sunni holiday) and everything else. It's hands down Shia dominance and will more than likely provoke more violence.
In my opinion, Saddam should have been tried on neutral ground with neutral laws. He should have had to face every single one of his victims at all trials, not just the Shiia one. It's quite ridiculous really, once the main trial concerning the Shias is completed, Saddam gets rushed to execution on a Sunni holiday while those who suffered just as much as well as those who suffered the force of what this "Iraqi Freedom war" was all about (WMDs, Chemical Weapons etc) -- the Kurds -- do not get true justice. The Kurds had just as much of a right to have Saddam stand up and face them in trial as the Shiias did.
Hell, the whole argument of having to execute Saddam before he is 70 and 30 days after the death sentance according to Iraqi law is just bogus. Under "Iraqi law" Saddam was apparently immune and was still in power. Technically speaking, executing Saddam after he was 70 and after the 30 days lapsed from the first trial (going against Iraqi law) is just the same as the trial and execution in the first place (going against Iraqi law).
I was all for the trial and execution of Saddam, but the process and way it was carried out stopped at nothing short of a complete farce and will simply feed the ever so popular divide in that country. If it had been carried out independently, this whole argument and idea of segregating Iraq more and more could have been avoided.
The Iraqi government is not mad at the fact it was filmed by a random cell phone, it's mad because the truth has been told. They filmed the whole thing themselfs, simply blocking out the portions they did not want anyone to see as well as taping without sound. The whole idea the government is going to "bring to justice" those who filmed it is out-right ridiculous, because they filmed it themselfs. They are simply running from the truth and the fact the execution was carried out completely wrong.
The Truth Hurts.

i heard an interesting theory lately, that the expedition of saddam's execution could be an attempt by iraq's shia-dominated government to mend some fences with iran.
interesting idea, i don't know what evidence there may be of this, but makes about as much sense as anything else over there.

Yeah, that was pretty gnarly.
Usually disposed dictators flee their country and spend the rest of their days in exiled luxury.

That Frankie Goes To Hollywood video pitting Ronald Reagan and Konstantin Chernenko lookalikes was the shiznit.
