So therefore you must have some evidence that consumer spending changes more than a few percentage points from year to year. Except - it doesn't. Especially not downwards.

The only downside I see is that I know many people from out-of-province (other Canadians) love shopping here because they save money on sales tax that they would otherwise have to pay in their home province (the "Alberta Advantage" as the Ontarians I know call it). But such a tax should not be designed to cater to out-of-province folks; Albertans are who matters here.
What do you mean by fair? It seems like your saying taxpayers have not been fair.

Uhhhhh . . . . not really. If anything I'm saying the current taxation form is not fair and we need to have a fair consumption tax put in.

Fair = the same rate applies to everyone, regardless of income level.

What a wonderful welcome to the city. Hey, thanks for coming to Calgary to spend your money but first you need to pay an entrance fee.

Yep, some people came knocking on my door over the weekend and handed me one of those. I'm in Calgary Mountain View, so probably one of the ridings that the NDP is hoping to pick up via such tactics since it was previously the sole Liberal riding.

Kinda feel bad for a guy who's polling 2%, and has to make a reply like that knowing he's full of it, but can't just quit.

People seem to be in the mood to spend in every province except Alberta, which posted a decrease in consumer spending of almost three per cent in the second quarter of 2016, the latest numbers show.
That took 2 seconds to find.
