Icon55 Sabres fire Phil Housley. Todd McLellan could be leading candidate for next coach

Buffalo Sabres @BuffaloSabres
Buffalo Sabres General Manager Jason Botterill has announced that Head Coach Phil Housley has been relieved of his duties.

News Update

Eric Duhatschek @eduhatschek
I'm hearing that Todd McLellan is closing in on an agreement to replace Phil Housley as the next coach of the Buffalo Sabres and that an announcement could come as early as tomorrow.

Interesting.

I thought Phil would be there a while. The team seemed to have turned a corner this year and would contend for the postseason next year.

The drop off after their long winning streak was huge. The team just couldn't bounce back after that. Even during their winning streak, they didn't look like world beaters. With a different coach, the sabres have a chance to make the playoffs next year. Lot of their youth took steps in the right direction. Would be interesting to see if they retain Skinner.

That's really too bad. I think he did a pretty good job.

I don't think the Sabres turned a corner at all. They had a white-hot start based on terrible percentages and then became the worst team in the entire league (yes, worse than the Sens) after the first twenty games.

They definitely needed a change.

Not a surprise. Whatever behind the scenes thing was last year, he just didn't look to have the feel of a head coach that had control of the room.

And then you've got Eichel who is always taking shots about his frustration in the media, I'm sure Botteril and the owners have heard from Eichel weekly.

Either way, it's a bad day to be an ex-Calgary Flames defenseman who wore #6 in 2001.

AV is going to LA, I think. He is in a position to choose. Why would he choose Buffalo?

Young team with a lot of good pieces and needing someone to help put it all together (which AV did in Vancouver). Why would he go to a tired old team like LA on the cusp of rebuilding? Besides location?

Yep we were absolutely awful this year. Maybe even worse than last year. All that hot streak did was give us a worse percentage for the draft lottery.

Even though coaching changes were expected, I am a little surprised there have been three already today.

Meh. They were always on the cards.

Make it and you're fine, or no sense in firing someone over nothing. Its the end of the season.

Since January 1st the Sabres were the worst team in the league.

Just 12-26 after new years.

Awful.

I'm not. It seems to be the trend in professional sports where teams waste no time firing coaches to get a head start on hiring the top available candidates.
