Is David Khan really a constitutional law lawyer? I can't tell from his debate points. #abdebate

Uh huh.

I thought Khan was very good and very bad.
I thought Kenney was very slick. If you polled people on who the professional politician was after watching that debate I think they'd pick Kenney hands down. He's the most polished of the group. Negative debate factor though was his exasperations from the sidelines.
Notley did not sound authoritative enough. Meak? Her attacks outside of the education critic subjects were not landing like I think she thought they would. I think Khan did a better job of attacking Kenney and part of that is he did it with a bit less frequency.
Mandel seemed very much at ease. From my seat, way too at ease. Policies sounded fine enough, but he was vulnerable to attack and I think specifically being nailed by Khan about turning down opioid assistance money from the Federal government landed like a howitzer in that room. He was shellshocked.
As a format I actually thought it was pretty good. There was cross talk but I think it was tolerable and within the confines of civility. Didn't like how Notley continued to talk through the moderator intervention to get her point in, especially when it's just completing a line from your comms strategy, but otherwise I thought there was enough restraint from the candidates and effective moderation from the moderator.

I think centrists lose actually. There were two of them (first problem) and on top of that it was clearly a two-horse race before the debate and moreso now. If you’re debating voting for a centrist, you surely hold your nose and vote for one of the main two.
I think they both had their moments, but neither was particularly inspiring. So basically it will be a miracle if either gets to official party status.
I think Kenney won though. He looked the part, landed a few good points and didn’t get rattled. That’s actually saying a lot given how poor their campaign has been.

Mandel should have worn a tie and a better suit.

I am a UCP partisan, but I really want to vote for David Khan. The tax shift is exactly what we need.

Nah. I think the centrists got good exposure and this was the platform to deliver basic messages. There is a middle ground and alot of people sitting on the fence can see where there votes can go. No left wing ideology, not right wing sliminess and lying. Centrists won this by a long mile IMO.

It’s actually a great parallel. A lot of people are willing to vote for just about anyone wearing blue this time around, and it’s perfectly reasonable for people to hope that say, some preacher who has homophobic views would not garner the votes. Is that not fair?
I agree, people ought to vote for a real person that is going to represent them in government. But if we’re going to happily criticise people for voting “orange” and ignoring social misgivings, let’s be equally happy criticising people for voting “blue” and ignoring social misgivings.
If you can hope that people would not vote in someone from the NDP in light of “serious transgressions” then you should hope the same regarding the UCP.
Otherwise we just get a bunch of MLAs every election that get in not on merit, but because of their party. Which admittedly will always happen, but that doesn’t make it right.

Well, democracy let's people get in power based on simple popularity contests without needing any qualifications. Then we elect bozos and wonder where we went wrong every four years.

Kenny succeeded in linking Notley to Trudeau, that was the key to victory for me. Wether it's true or not, he presented a convincing impression that she was either very naive or even worse, did so deliberately and not in the best interests of Calgarians.
Furthermore as a politician who had succeeded federally, he is more convincing as someone who can handle the feds successful. In the coming years constitutional issues and federal provincial relations this will become an existential issue for Calgary and maybe even Alberta.

Just watched it on youtube.
I was surprised to learn that Khan is the only one at a podium to have actually built a podium, impressive guy.
Mandel made some huge mistakes that any politician shouldn't make, people don't like seeing their leaders as weak or fragile. That outfit looked like he just pulled his old suit out of the closet for a special occasion but didn't realize the tie had a stain on it. He mentioned 2 or 3 times about his poor health. These are unforced errors for someone who had the opportunity to cash in on discontent with the 2 leading parties. I'm not saying they could win but they had the chance to get into the double digits and with that performance I'd be surprised if they gain any support really.
Notley did alright but she needed a win.
Kenney didn't win anything but didn't lose either, as the front runner that's probably good enough.
The format was garbage, I actually yelled out loud to "shut the $#@% up" at one point where all 4 + the moderator were talking at the same time. They should do another debate with just Kenney and Notley.

I might be old, but there are only two leaders debates federally, one in english and one in french.
They really need to do a leaders rap battle.

I think that Kahn did a fabulous job of building the podiums, he also snaked the Toilets and made finger snacks for the moderators.
He's really talented.

I don't think the debate changed much as between the UCP and NDP - however Mandel did not come across as a leader in waiting to me. The Alberta Party is going nowhere until they find leadership. Why the AP and Liberals don't merge is beyond me.
