Icon36 Glen Sather to step down as president of the Rangers?

Bob McKenzie
@TSNBobMcKenzie
Is Glen Sather stepping down as president of NYR? Multiple sources suggest it’s likely to happen in the near future, that this is Sather’s call and that he would still be an advisor to James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of MSG, but NYR would be looking for a new president.

When I saw the headline first thought that came to mind was that he is stepping down to accept a position with the Oilers. Really would anyone be surprised if the Oilers reached out to him? It would kind of complete the circus.

Lol I can literally hear the press conference now. The combined weight of their Stanley cup rings should be enough to anchor the franchise to the bottom of the standings for another 2 decades. I love the ineptitude of the Oilers.

I was under the impression that Slats isn't in the best of health, so it wouldn't surprise me at all.

The arrogance, and the myth of his perceived abilities certainly laid the ground work for Lowe who tries so hard everyday to be like Sather. But, it’s not the 80s anymore and letting players just learn on the ice without a plan doesn’t work anymore, and most players don’t need a father figure to help them tie their shoes each day like Slats was for some of the Boys on the Bus.

His proclamation in his last year or so with the Oilers that he could win multiple cups if he had the funds and resources of the Rangers, tells you all you need to know about him. He got to the finals once with the Rangers, 15 or so years after joining them. And they got swept.

I thought this already happened.
Why does it seem like he and Lou Lamoriello are both always retiring yet both always around?

In 5 years we will hear that he has retired as advisor to James Dolan, and I will say the same thing.

This is factually incorrectly and completely disingenuous.

They have been a perennial playoff team since 05 and were not swept in a cup final as you mistakenly point out. If you actually knew anything about that particular Cup final you would of course know they lost three games in overtime, but that simply doesn't fit with your narrative.

The Flames would have loved to have half as many playoff appearances in that period.

Why do you feel there is need to drag the Flames into this debate?

A great hockey mind and architect of several Cup final overtime losses!

I think you're missing the point.

When he was with the Oilers Sather claimed he could easily build a dynasty if he had the resources of the Rangers. Then he went to the Rangers and didn't come close to his oh so Oilery proclamation. Yes, he had a perennial playoff team for the most part. But how hard is that really when you have unlimited resources, prior to the salary cap being implemented? Even after the cap was in place the Rangers were still one of, if not THE, pre-eminent destinations for NHL players. The Rangers have always had a leg up on the competition and have done very little with it. All of that would be fine except that Sather himself bragged about it before he was there.

He's an arrogant enabler who was a decent hockey coach and GM but not the genious he made himself out to be.

Yeah, hes the perfect Oiler.

Lots of talk of past success but nearly constant failure despite ridiculous advantages.

That said, I doubt hes ever leaving New York to regain his Throne as the King of Dumspterville.

Sather's accomplishments are about as overblown as Lowe's ego.

Do not forget that the Rangers were middling to nowhere as a franchise until they hired former Bruins Interim GM Jeff Gorton.

Jeff drafted & signed Lucic, Marchand, Bergeron, Kessel, Chara, before Chiarelli punted him a year into Pete’s tenure as Bruins GM.

Sather had him operating like a chimp behind the scenes for the better part of a decade while he took the glory.
