On Saturday, Mandel summoned reporters and camera operators to the bank of the North Saskatchewan River to declare the Alberta Party would eliminate the NDP’s economy-wide carbon tax, which began in January 2017.

“It’s been a slush fund,” Mandel said of the tax. “It’s been something I think has hurt small business, families travelling and heating homes, municipalities, not-for-profit organizations.”

Since the tax went up on Jan. 1, 2018, Albertans have paid 6.73 cents tax on a litre of gasoline and $1.52 per Gigajoule of natural gas.

Will whoever wins the election have the guts to do something about the deficit and the debt? These last few years are going to be on the backs of the next generation....

Well the ABP just lost 2 votes with that completely idiotic "policy" on cancelling the carbon tax. I worked on energy policy for 4 years with them and it was never even considered, in fact it was generally supported (differences in where the carbon tax funding goes aka not general revenue).

Climate change is real and we need to do our part, despite being a bit player. Theres enormous potential in Alberta for new tech, energy efficiency, engineering etc. But now we are gonna offload tax funds to Ottawa and remove any economic incentives to lower carbon emissions. Pretty damn disappointing.

I don’t think you really understand how Alberta industry works.

It's difficult to do our part when we compete in a global economy and other countries don't have the same overhead costs.

Given their stance used to be redirect the carbon levy to reduce the debt, I'm not sure if this new stance will result in additional votes, or makes them appear wishy-washy and turn people off .

You can safely direct your outrage on something else then, cause that wasn't the case.

The Kamakaze stuff, the Jason Kenney is evil movie, and the GSA stuff is not moving the dial.

UCP is not budging from ~50%.

The other beneficiary of a UCP win will be the Calgary Flames. They have not won a playoff game since May 5, 2015 the same night Notley got elected.

The NDP spent 2 years shooting themselves in the face and leaving a lasting legacy of insane debt combined with multiple credit downgrades making debt servicing an enormous part of their (already bad) budget and then made a personal hobby of hamstringing our primary industries and then spending two more years (on our dime) pretending to fix it.

I'm half expecting Notley to serve us up a troll-esque photo of her lighting a cigar from a gas flare while flaunting a first-class plane ticket to BC or Ontario.

Alberta throws its weight around?

Overtime pay and banked time are different, which is the reason for the correction. My “outrage” was not based on the incorrect information in the Fort Mac article, it was based on the policy. I’d implore you to actually read it.

I get banked time, not overtime pay. This policy directly effects the way this gets calculated, and while I trust my employers to just continue on with the status quo, Kenney can still pound sand.

Just pure speculation in my part...with Linda Duncan’s retirement from federal politics if Notley runs in the Edmonton Strathcona federal riding?

She is just what the federal NDP needs.

The NDP could really use someone to get back to their pro labour roots. She would do good work to get rid of the Leap Manifesto Group and give credibility to them as an option.

We get a lot of attention because of our economy. We are basically 10% of the population and we are one of the "big 4" provinces. Ontario and quebec are like 55% of the population.

The citizens of our country are morally bankrupt. "Give us more stuff, lower our taxes!! We can't pay for any of it, but let's not worry about it!"

People have no problem leaving their kids generation with massive debt. When will this all end? When will people get real and admit we have no intention of ever really paying back all that government debt?

Not everyone agrees with lowering taxes to pay for more things.

Maybe when political parties stop trying to convince everyone that lowering taxes will get the debt paid off quicker?
