				 2019 Major League Baseball Thread

			It's opening day,
We already have the 2019 Blue Jays thread started, but we need a thread for the deviants and miscreants who cheer for a US based team.

The Mariners and Athletics already had a mini-series in Japan where Ichiro gave his final goodbye, but for the rest of us... it all starts today.

FiveThrityEight is predicting the Astros to have the best record in baseball, followed by the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Indians, in that order. All of which have above an 80% predicted chance to make the post season.

Astros are the team with the best odds of winning it all.

My lowly team is in the AL West with the Astros, I'm thinking it's going to be a long year which I suppose will make it so the last year at the Ballpark at Arlington won't fly by. I'm sad I won't get the chance to see a game there.

 Regardless,

 PLAY BALL!

Giants at Padres (4:10 p.m.): In what may be one of the most anticipated Opening Day games in Padres history, Manny Machado, the newest San Diego denizen, will take the field in front of his new home fans to begin the year. The Padres’ $300 million man has never hit an Opening Day home run. He’ll be in the infield behind Eric Lauer, who will be the second-youngest Opening Day starting pitcher in franchise history at 23 years, 298 days old. The Padres will host the Giants, who will have ace Madison Bumgarner on the mound for his fifth career Opening Day start, tying Larry Jansen for third-most for the franchise in the Modern Era. It’ll be the final Opening Day for manager Bruce Bochy, who fittingly managed the Padres before the Giants and will be retiring after the season. More > |

It's insane that they're moving. I got to see 4 games there in 2003 I think. Terrific park.

I know, and the new ballpark doesn't look nearly as nice. Playing baseball in a warehouse.
https://www.ballparksofbaseball.com/...be-life-field/
The big complaint about the "old" park is the temperature in the summer. The Texas heat is unbearable.

But it was so beautiful, and the new one is so ugly. Ugh.

Anyway, I might try and check out the Padres-Giants game after the Rangers game.

Didn’t even realize they were building yet another stadium for the Rangers. The current one isn’t even that old. They try to avoid the heat by not playing day games after a certain date (at least that’s what they used to do). Maybe it’s the Canadian in me but it was awesome sitting in an outfield seat with a cold beer on a hot evening watching a game, the temperatures were a bonus rather than a drawback. Being an Avgeek it didn’t hurt that the ballpark sits under the arrival/departure path of DFW and a non stop air show was there to watch too.

Saw one game at the new park and four games at the old original Arlington Stadium including Nolan Ryan’s no hitter against them Jays. Great memories

In the AL it's pretty much a certainty that the Astro's, Red Sox, and Yankees will be in the playoffs. Cleveland is still the favorite in the Central, but they've lost pieces and a the Twins are a pretty trendy pick. The A's and Rays seem like the other teams who'll be in the mix for the Wild Card spots. The Angels and Mariners could be mediocre, and everyone else is trying to lose 100+ games.
The NL seems to be a little less tanky as the Central, and East Divisions look to have more than 1-2 teams able to be in the mix, and in the West the Dodgers seem to be the best team, but Colorado could be in the mix too. The NL doensn't have a glut of teams that look like they're trying to lose 100+ games like the AL does.

Alex Anthopoulos is an idiot. You have a potent offense and decided to add to it, but you didn't address your garbage bullpen.

Somehow the Rangers take 2 of 3 against the Cubs. Gallo stole home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth to walk it off.
Odd start to the season for sure.

The Cardinals are out of players so Yadier Molina is playing 3rd base!
Why are the Pirates not bunting to him?

Edit: boo Molina never touched the ball

Holy crap wow! Anyone see the A's-Red Sox game?

A's centre fielder Ramon Laureano just threw a dart to nail Bogaerts at 3rd base from deep right centre field about 375 feet away as Bogaerts looked to have a sure triple. Also if that hit Bogaerts connected on was just 1 foot further to the left it would've been a game tying HR.

Awesome.

Gotta love the first week of baseball
 - The Orioles have more wins than the Yankees and Red Sox combined
 - The Red Sox have the worst run differential in baseball by far
 - Zach Greinke has two homeruns: Mike Trout, Nolan Arenado and Aaron Judge have zero combined
 - The Diamondbacks have allowed 50 runs in six games; The Mariners have score 56 runs in eight games
