Speaking as someone who was at the LA game this loss makes me angry with so few games left. I know the sky isn’t falling, just hate to not win a game we should win on paper. So many ineffective flames. Against a team with comeau and polak, the definition of caveman defenseman with no skill. Yes we are still up on SJ, yes Dallas winning is ok for us. Just hate losing two games in a row, whatever the excuse is (LA playing spoiler, DAL intent on a playoff spot). I do worry about tight checking hockey and how we respond. I hope this is just foot off the gas hockey because we clinched.

Over 70 shots and 1 goal which came after almost 2 hours of play.
It doesn’t get much more boring than that.

Good news is that the loss almost guarantees the Flames will not play the Stars in the playoffs unless it is in the 3rd round.

Not really. Outside of that gam we go 500 and San Jose goes 4-1? Probably still a 90% chance even if we lose the San Jose game.

Prior to the all star break these were the dominant CP discussions;
- The team's pace to eclipse the 1989 team's 117 points. Now it appears they aren't even going to break 110 points.
- Gaudreau in the Hart trophy discussion. He's now on pace to finish outside the NHL top 10 scoring.
- Monahan on pace for 45 goals. Still sitting at 31 goals which he's achieved a few times already in his career. Highly unlikely to get even 33 goals.
- Lindholm on pace for 90+ points. Unlikely to break 80 points.
The team hasn't only hit the wall, they have fallen off a cliff. Right now the only reason they are going to make the playoffs is because of the points they banked during the first 2/3 of the season as they are limping in the playoffs playing as poorly as any team that will make the dance.
There was an Athletic article on how a team is playing going into the playoffs matters. Well it's not a perfect indication of playoff success or disappointment it does appear that teams that play better down the stretch have a considerably higher chance of playoff success than teams that banked a lot of points in the first half of the season.

In that sense, playing well down the stretch — specifically a team’s process at 5-on-5 — mattered more than its full-season play.

The playoffs is a new season so the Flames will get a fresh start but history is not on their side here especially when you factor the past failures of this organization with home ice advantage in the playoffs.

You have to wonder what is going through the minds of the coaching staff.
I listened to Ward on the radio after the game but all he said was you gotta stick with the process. I get he’s not going to publicly call out anybody.

If I was a betting man I would put my money on the Avs going into the 1st round if they play the Flames.

So..2 crazy questions:
1- does this team really miss Bennett?? Is he a bit of a catalyst?
2 -What does Peters do tomorrow? Keep trying to let them work it out as is OR insert a couple of the extra guys for a slight change? (hello Quine, Use a call up on Dube?, Hello Kylington or Stone?)

Agree. All teams go through slumps over a long season. It was not long ago that COL looked awful and there was dissension in their room. But they look great right now and their first line looks like it will carry them into the playoffs.

Reading through this thread this morning has me wondering how posters are saying we've blown the division (6 point lead) but the brightside of the loss is it means we likely wont see Dallas fall to the second wild card spot (3 point lead)

They are playing without Landeskog and Rantanen right now. Its the MacKinnon show right now.

Surprised no mention of Brodie in the PGT.
First goal he does some lame flyby and lets Radulov by - to be fair there were two other guys on this play but I would hope the defenseman would be smart enough to not fly by with a stick check and let the guy behind you.
Second goal - he's got the puck at the behind the net with boatloads of time - he could have taken two steps and clear the puck, but instead tries a high difficulty pass to Hanifan who can't reach it, the Stars get possession back and score.
Two brutal plays - two goals.

They have been discussing him on 960 this morning as the morning crew are not fans of his. Brodie is a high risk/reward player and when things are going good and the team is scoring his mistakes can be overcome but when the games are tight and every goal matters he's a liability at times. I know the organization likes him but you can argue his gaffes this season has cost the team more points than Smith's mistakes. We are just going to have to hold our breath in the playoffs that he's more disciplined.

I think what is frustrating to many of us is that, yes the flames have "punched their ticket" and can relax a little. But, if they keep the pedal down and get rolling they can secure a vastly easier matchup in round 1.
BUT, if we were going to have another mini slump before the end of the season I would rather it be right now than in the last 3 games.
the other concerning thing is it definitely loos like a lot of the GG bad habits are showing up again, a lot of slow progress up ice, a lot of perimeter shots making goalies like jack campbell look like vezina winners, and a lot of d to d passes (at least more than earlier this season, I don't think our D has been horrible this past while)
Mony may need to sit for a game, as he truly contributes nothing if he isn't scoring, which is fine most of the time but you need him to have some edge, or any edge and get engaged.

CGY was able to be successful against this tight checking style against MIN and EDM earlier in year. Peters seemed to know exactly what they need to do based on his post game comments. They have to buy in and do it on the ice.

I agree. Those two plays by him were God awful but I suppose it doesn’t negate the total lack of scoring.

Pretty disappointing that some of those trends just stopped completely. It does give you pause since absolute top players in the league are able to put together full seasons, and it’s their performance over 82 games that is the measuring stick. Gaudreau is a tremendous talent but there are a few players in the league that can consistently out produce him.
As for Lindholm and Monahan, this is two years in a row each player has limped to the finish line in the regular season. Certainly there could be a multitude of factors, but ultimately results are what they are.
No doubt the team can right the ship for the playoffs but it is a little troubling given the lack of playoff history here. Entering the playoffs brimming with confidence would really be nice.

But those were PP goals and he scored therefore he was plus 1!
