How would they have lost them?
If this isn't a fleecing I don't know what is.

I think there should be some reasonable compensation to the team that loses the player (I.eCanes). Like a second rounder. Make it less enticing for teams to sign these guys without giving up something decent.

They should just extend the years until UFA by one. Make them go play in Europe for a year or something if they really want to be a UFA

Was it not reported that they weren’t interested in signing with the canes?

I don’t like it either. I would prefer some alternative like maybe having a supplemental draft for college UFAs.

Think they wanted too but it was reported that the Canes were lowballing them hard.
Which seems crazy to see the great deals Treliving inked them too, so either that's not accurate, or they were REALLY lowballing them

Major junior players can sign with any team they want too, if they wait four years following their draft. As can Euros from most leagues besides the KHL.
The difference is simply that one guy is getting a full ride scholarship towards a Harvard education, which gives him incentive to hold out.

There's no real difference. An 18 year old major junior player would be able to wait four years after being drafted (twice since the team only holds their rights for 2 years) and then become a UFA.

Okay so the alternative is, Canes didn’t want them at that price. So they traded them away and got a decent return. I still don’t understand how this trade is hilariously in Calgary’s favour. It isn’t. The pieces definitely work better for the Flames than what went out, so that’s great.
Bottom line, there are no GMs in the league thinking “oh man I gotta be careful with treliving or he’ll fleece me”.

Exactly. Five years instead of 4 would substantially reduce the number of players doing this.

Don’t junior players have to re-enter the draft at least once?

And Gaudreau wasn't signing with the Flames at one point. Contract negotiations, especially ones so early like that, don't mean you lose the player for nothing.

I hope the Canes can trade him and at least get something back. I harbor no ill-will towards them, as they gave us a couple sweet players and coach. But now that the writings on the wall, trade him and get something of value. He is still a blue-chip prospect and should garner a decent return.
I also don't blame Fox for finishing school. Yes the NHL awaits him with millions in riches. But there's something to be said for having a degree from freakin' Harvard. There is life after hockey, and he'll be set up quite nicely with that kind of education.

Yeah, I am sure the Canes were fully aware of the risk.

After 2 years, if they are not signed, they re-enter the draft. If they are drafted again, after an additional 2 years, they are UFAs and able to sign where they want.

Yeah they'd re-enter the draft but they'd still be able to be a UFA after the same amount of time as a college player. The only difference is there's no incentive too because they aren't getting a scholarship on top of it.
That's why I'd like to see the one extra year after college before being a UFA. That way the player can still finish school if he wants without the pressure of becoming a free agent, and if they really want to pick their own team they have to wait an extra year to turn pro in North America

Yeah, the rules are the same for junior players vs College, it's just that Junior players can be signed and still play in Junior. You want to fix this, the NCAA needs to stop screwing over their athletes and let them sign a contract (even though it doesn't pay them).

Glad the Canes are poised to make the playoffs as this softens the blow of this trade. They get a year of Ferland and 3 years of Dougie and ended a long playoff drought with the moves they made this summer.
Realistically if Fox and Ferland walk it is 1 year of Ferland, 3 years of Dougie for 6 years of Ali shown/Hanifin (I know Treliving signed those after the trade but both players signed for around their rumored ask)
Pure steal for the Flames

Just imagine being a kid who decides he wants to finish his Harvard Education after being in school for 15 years and getting hated on for it. Ha.
