Yeah I think we know the real story here. Calling a character a 'Mary Sue' is along the same lines as starting with "I'm not sexist, but..."

The term Mary Sue originates from a character named Mary Sue in a Star Trek fan fic parody written by a woman. Not sure why that's sexist.

I mean a Mary Sue is a generic literary term, but ok.

The movie will still make 2 billion dollars, so I'm sure no one will care, but it will be disappointing if Captain Marvel plays a critical role in the finale. If she's some side action like Spider-Man and Black Panther were, that's another story. I get that they've sacrificed story in the past to push their phases forward, but this should be different.
|
We don't know her role yet. Seems like you are a little early in getting worked up.
Let's wait until the movie comes out before we complain about Captain Marvel?

I mean, I would assume you were similarly distressed about Doctor Strange in Infinity War, right? A being of near unlimited mystical power and time travel powers shoe horned in to the Avengers after only one solo movie? No? I wonder why...

I think implying that people are sexist for disliking how a character of this power level was introduced near the end of a 10 year arc is a smart strategy inducive to friendly discussion.

But that's the thing.
You are just assuming she's suddenly being thrown in to come save the day and be some Superman level of power.
IMO she's no more powerful than Thor, and would be no worse then suddenly giving Thor a new super weapon, that's more powerful than his old broken super weapon. Even though they just had a whole movie about him being more than just his Hammer. Or suddenly giving Iron Man some crazy new Nano tech suit without real backstory on how's he's now able to develop said Nano Tech - making him much stronger than his previous incarnations.

Yeah this is the issue with the Mary Sue term - sure the term itself is not sexist. But when people only tend to use it for female characters they don't personally like as a way to dis-credit said character (Rey in Star Wars is the other recent example) then it potentially does become a sexist term.

What male character in the MCU would be the equivalent of a Mary Sue? Maybe there's a reason people see Captain Marvel as one?

Vision in Age of Ultron would likely have been the best example - but they muted his abilities in future films.
Dr. Strange with the time stone was pretty much unstoppable at times - until he made the decision to give up the stone.
Thor is a god, with pretty much unlimited powers after the Ragnarok ark + getting Stormbreaker.
Really though maybe the big difference here is that I'm not assuming that Captain Marvel is going to be some all powerful hero that's going to make quick work of Thanos like Nik and Ashasx.
Going to spoiler the next part since Captain Marvel is only recently released.

New Avengers trailer is as awesome. I love that they still haven't given us much besides the fact that Tony finds the team. Which we all knew had to happen, but we still don't know how.
The remnants come together, they form up a team, and stuff happens in new suits. That's literally all we know.
Google says there is no set date for tickets yet, have to keep our eyes open.

Then I guess you don't know what a Mary Sue is.
Super heroes are going to be physically strong characters. There are going to be a lot of really strong characters in the MCU. Every one of these characters faced setbacks in their own films and still aren't impossibly strong in Infinity War. Strange's powers are even explained because of the infinity stone he has - it is only taken away from him by somebody who has more infinity stones. Once it is taken away, he loses a lot of his strength.
Marvel seems to be afraid to show any flaw or weakness in Captain Marvel. It's weird. It's boring. She starts her film as incredibly strong, and ends it by being invincible.

I definitely love how two trailers in and a month away from release, we all have a very definite sense of where the film is going to take us all but only the murkiest idea of exactly how it's going to get us there. It's gonna be a helluva ride.

I don’t think there was anything in the CM movie that Thor couldn’t have done. I don’t see her as some all powerful superman type. Just another weapon in the arsenal.
Different note, have we see Thanos in any trailers besides being a farmer? Pretty cool how they give nothing away.

I think you meant to say his career was buoyed by being a part of the classic film Ghost Rider 2. Common mistake.
