Dozens charged in nationwide US College acceptance Scheme

Big news and not just because of some of the names of the indicted. Basically, it is a scheme to get people accepted to top schools as student athletes based on fake athletic resumes, having third parties take entrance exams etc. All for large sums of money of course.
Actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin are two of the indicted. Other indicted include admin and coaches from Yale, Wake Forest, and UCLA. Just another example of how much money talks in the US college system.

		| Huffman, best known for her role on TV's "Desperate Housewives," is accused of paying $15,000 to an organization that then facilitated cheating for her daughter on the SATs, the indictment said. Huffman also discussed the scheme in a recorded phone call with a cooperating witness, the indictment said. |

I'm never shocked by what rich people do to "help" their kids.

wonder if WH Macy knew. I'm guessing no.

when I was younger I would have said the spouse always would have known. but over the years I've seen how easy it is for people to hide major secrets from their spouses.

Lori Loughlin? I loved her in RAD. Need to see more of her riding her BMX in Bowness Park or in a parade down main street Cochrane.

Loughlin and her husband allegedly paid $500k to get their two daughters into USC.
One of their daughters took a lot of flack from social media last year when she stated that the only reason she was going to school was to party and had little interest in attending classes.

Opens a New Window. “But I do want the experience of like game days, partying … I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know.”
Days later, Olivia, who also has 1.3 million Instagram followers, apologized in a second video titled, “I’m sorry.”

Good to see USC living up to its alternate name of "University of Spoiled Children". Rich people using scams to get poor student children into school is nothing new at all, although they usually just donate straight to the University (with the bribe on the side) and not something convoluted like this.

Probably could have just donated that $500k directly to USC and gotten her kids in.
edit: yeah, what the Senator said.

America's institutions of higher education are so corrupted by money that an operation like this won't have any lasting effect.

Maybe they were such bad students that the university wanted an international airport in exchange for letting them in. |

I didn't go to college or university and I am genuinely curious about this story. I always assumed if you were super rich you could simply buy your kids way in, without having to resort to anything illegal. Are there actual legal requirements that private schools need to adhere to when it comes to admissions, or is there complete discretion given to the school.

I thought all rich people needed to do was give the school grants, and their kids are automatically in.
I like how the authorities are talking about this corruption like it's something new. That's the way the whole system worked from the beginning. Why are they busting them now all of a sudden?

If they really wanted to bust schools for corruption, they should really be going after the NCAA, and all their exploitation of students for financial gain.

Cheating on SATs is academic fraud.
A friend of mine was expelled from U of C for having another person write an exam for her. No problem, she just went to U of A instead with no consequences.
