I would think he is either the leadoff hitter (assuming Reed Johnson is traded) or is later in the line-up.

I would it see as Wells (#3), Glaus, Thomas, Overbay .... something like that.

Why would you put one of your better power guys at leadoff? It sure didn't help the nationals to have their best hitter leading off.

Now, I could see him leading off vs. RHP, but lefties? Not a chance.

vs. RHP, here is what I'd do:

Johnson
Overbay
Wells
Thomas
Glaus
Rios
Zaun
Hill
Random SS

Lefties:

Johnson
Rios
Wells
Glaus
Thomas
Hill
Overbay
Catcher (Likely Phillips, but Zaun too)
Random SS

If Overbay/Zaun are in the lineup together vs. LHP, I'd bat One of them 6th and the other one 8th - making sure they don't go back to back.

Glaus is a bad hitter vs. RHP, he shouldn't bat cleanup vs. them.

I am assuming Johnson is traded. Secondly Rios is extremely quick so he would be ideal for the 1st or 2nd spot. Overbay is not that quick I would put him later in the line-up.

Rios
Hill
Wells
Glaus
Thomas
Overbay
Zaun
Stairs
SS

As for Glaus he batted Cleanup all year last season why would it change?

Because you should change things which don't benefit the ball club. Glaus batting cleanup is one of those things.

We have better/more capable people who can hit RHP at the cleanup spot, cleanup is usually your big power guy - Glaus is that guy... for Lefties.

The reason I put Overbay 2nd is because although Rios does have speed, the Jays aren't a team that steals bases. Their goal is to get on base, which is why an OBP guy is better served in that position.

I guess we will have to wait and see. No sense argueing the line-up.

Zito crosses the Bay and joins the Giants. What a great new deal for Zito.

http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=189946&hubname=

I am shocked that its the Giants that he signs with. I thought for sure it would be the Mets.

Perhaps, but hasn't Zito expressed that he likes the West Coast/ocean/etc type of lifestyle? Maybe not in direct reference to where he is going as a free agent, but I am sure on the odd interview over the years from him that I have heard/read that he has mentioned many times how he enjoys California and the West Coast.

Which of course could mean nothing (i.e. the athelete's motto of "I like City/Area X because tghat is where I am currently playing").

Well pretty good chance he'll be able to put up better numbers throwing in the National League. It's certainly an easier league to pitch in, and often you don't have to throw as many innings because you get pinch hit for in the 6th or 7th inning. Annual salary is lower than what I expected though, although it is pretty long term. But it was a good year for him to be UFA as I doubt he would have got that contract in other years. Lets fact it he's pitched in a pretty pitcher friendly park his entire career. I doubt he'd have the career numbers he has if he'd been in Fenway.

Not Free Agency related per se, but I found this and thought it was kind of interesting:

http://apnews.myway.com//article/20070104/D8ME8PNG0.html

A's Beane Joins Board of NetSuite Inc.
Renowned for building one of baseball's most successful teams on a shoestring budget, Oakland Athletics executive Billy Beane will test his business acumen by joining the board of NetSuite Inc. - a rising Silicon Valley company backed by computer software mogul Larry Ellison.

....

"I like to diversify myself," Beane said during an interview Wednesday. "This is an opportunity to be with a company with an impressive pedigree and to be around people that do things differently."

..........

"This idea about working with Billy has been rolling around my head ever since 'Moneyball' came out," Nelson said.
Other executives apparently have had similar ideas because Beane said he has turned down numerous other offers to serve on the boards of other companies that didn't seem like a good fit for his skills. He is currently a director at two privately held companies involved in sports, equipment-maker Easton-Bell Sports Inc. and ProTrade, the maker of an Internet game that trades professional athletes like stocks.

I read yesterday that Baltimore (I think), signed Sidney Ponsoon to a minor-league contract. Has he dropped off that much to only get a minor-league contract? A few years back he was a near Ace.

Yes Ponson has all but fallen off the radar. Sir Sidney needs to learn to lay off the booze. I doubt he makes it back to the majors ever.

Interesting as well is this story....

Company claims 1998 baseball 'juiced'

http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=190832&hubname=mlb

A company that uses computer imaging claims baseballs had a larger rubberized core and a synthetic rubber ring in 1998, including the ball Mark McGwire hit for his 70th homer.

...

"Examining the CT images of Mark McGwire's 70th home run ball one can clearly see the synthetic ring around the core - or 'pill' - of the baseball," UMS president David Zavagno said. "While Mark McGwire may or may not have used illegal steroids, the evidence shows his ball - under the governing body of the league - was juiced."

Read that today. How MLB is defending against that I have no idea. Pretty much MLB is saying, "it's my words against yours". In this case, it's evidence against their words. Ridiculous.

Yup, looks like it. One of the worst kept secrets for a long time now...

http://tsn.ca/mlb/news_story/?ID=190859&hubname=

Arizona would send pitcher Luis Vizcaino to the Yankees along with minor league pitcher Ross Ohlendorf and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, another baseball official said, also on condition of anonymity. The Yankees also might receive another minor league pitcher, the official said, and would pay between US$1.5 million and $2 million of Johnson's $16 million salary this year.
