You can never accuse Treliving of standing pat in the offseason. I would expect as usual he's probably a big player at the draft. If the team bows out in the playoffs with the goaltenders bombing in spectacular fashion I can see the Flames 1st round pick being in play for a quality name goaltender.

5 years is a long time to be big game hunting on a goalie without any trophy bucks mounted on the wall.
We keep going over and over this same ground, but context matters a lot when it comes to the goalie question.

In Treliving's five years of "big game hunting" he has also added Dougie Hamilton, Travis Hamonic, Michael Stone, Elias Lindholm, and Noah Hanifin. The acquisition of a starting goalie has clearly not been as high a priority for this organization, which has spent significant assets on defensemen; with this year's results it is not hard too see why this is the case. In other words, had Treliving spent the same assets to get a starting goalie it would have come at the expense of another of his very astute player acquisitions. Had he opted to trade for Cam Talbot instead of Dougie Hamilton in 2015 do the Flames even get the chance to land Lindholm and Hanifin in 2018? Had he traded for Bishop in 2016, how does he then address the hole created by Matthew Tkachuk's absence?

It takes a long time to build a team, and he is clearly not done yet. From his history we can see that he has always recognised the problem, but preferred to make more significant changes to other parts of the lineup. I think this is essentially the last hole for him to fill having looked after other areas of concern.

I wouldn't say my standards are low. I just didn't think that all 6 goals could be blamed on goaltending. Were there some that he could have saved? Sure there was. There were also some that were from defensive breakdowns and lucky bounces. All I was saying was that Rittich wasn't great, but he wasn't completely terrible either. Still was the second best goalie on the ice, which is what made a big difference in the outcome.

Rittich let in two bad ones...game was over though

It looks worse with the bounces and the other guy playing ridiculously good

Couldn't have said it better. As a fan we can be a bit more emotionally invested in wins and losses, but acquiring players in competition with 30 other teams requires a lot of diligence.

BT is not done yet, but like every GM he has to work within the framework of players, contracts and whatever is available.
What would make you think BT is capable of addressing this? He’s failed miserably multiple times. His last attempt was a 36 year old that the Phoenix Coyotes were willing to pay to go away despite running one of the smallest budgets in the league.

The other guy played like an NHL goaltender. Nothing special. We are just not used to seeing that since Kipper left.

I'm likely in the big minority here, but i disagree with this.

From where he took over to where this club is now, its been a remarkable transition. In fact I would suggest it is a couple years ahead of where it would "normally" be. he has had 4 drafts and 4 UFA periods to make major moves. Now he hasn't made such changes at every opportunity, but he has done something every season. I don't mean cursory moves, but blockbuster/roster altering moves. He has hit for a pretty nice average in them as well.

With 3 seperate guys able to transition almost immediately from junior to the NHL without major gaffes and periodical AHL stints, the re-build is ahead of where it reasonably could have been expected. That includes whiffing to a large degree on the teams highest draft pick in team history. That's pretty damn impressive IMO. Now there is one apparent glaring weakness on the club at this point and BT has positioned himself to strike and act on it with a plethora of assets come the summer. The options will be way higher and the cost somewhat lower vs trying to address this at the TDL.

Yes he has "hoped" his G selection recently would catch lightning in a bottle and both solidified the position long term and give the guys a chance in the short time frame. I doubt, very much, he fully expected that to happen however. He has, with almost every other move, been looking long term as a GM really should. A coach worries about today, a GM worries about today, tomorrow and much further down the road.

This on ice product looks as good as it has in literally 30 years. All of it done by a guy who hasn't been in his office 5 years yet. When I read the sentiment that he should be fired because the G situation isn't where we would like it to be, I just shake my head. A new GM means that guy will change the roster, change the coach (every GM brings in his own guy).

Stability at the top is generally a common theme among management teams in almost every successful business or sporting venture. The NHL is both, so it's doubly important you find it and hold on to it as long as you can. Knowing full well we are a society that wants instant gratification, there is a lot more satisfaction IMO when things are built correctly and you see a long term plan come to fruition. We are so close to that as Flames fans right now.

Brad Treliving has not only earned the trust of his bosses and players, but IMO should be given a very long leash from the masses as well. This is a team that wasn't even in the playoffs last season and now we are talking about missing one piece that would allow a long playoff run and a piece that may still already be in the stable now.

Enjoy it.

Andersen had a phenomenal game last night. Another reason to believe that yesterday was just a weird blip on the radar for an otherwise excellent season.

I think the Flames will be more than fine, as long as their goalies can rebound from these last two games and get back to their February quality.

Logic says Smith will get Vegas, and Rittich will get Arizona. However, I could easily see the opposite "to get Smith going", while Rittich faces another firing squad.

I mean, that's a good excuse (it really is), but somebody has to play those teams. Those games may be rare now, but in the playoffs, they'll be increasingly common. I do think Rittich can handle it but saying he only gets lit up by good teams isn't all that reassuring entering the playoffs.

Top goalies rarely move and he's been involved with all of them. Biggest problem is that he's had to settle for Smith/Elliott when they weren't the highest bidder for Fleury/Andersen.

Fleury: Flames had an offer in, Pittsburgh decided they were better off moving him to Vegas instead of losing a different player in the expansion draft and losing Fleury. Flames settle for Smith.

Andersen: Rumored to be down to Flames & Leafs. Flames offered two 2nd round picks, Ducks wanted Flames first (6th overall) from the division rival and Leafs had the better offer of 1st (30th) plus a 2nd. Flames settle for Elliott.

Bishop: Rumoured to have a deal done on two occasions. One was the rumored one where they couldn't get King to sign off, the other was rumored that Bishop wouldn't wave to come here.

Raanta: Moved in a package that included a 9th overall pick - so not really sure Flames wanted to be involved with that.

I think the biggest mistake Treliving made was not getting a reliable back up this offseason. Lehner, Halak, Khudobin, were all available and could have provided some value. But at the same time Rittich was a big part of our success early in the season, and is still ranked 22nd overall in save percentage.

This is an actual PGT thread from last season, almost exactly a year to the day. My expectations remain -- make the playoffs and hopefully win a round or two. I don't want to go back to the horror of last year...

If Treliving goes out and gets a reliable backup, they're running in tandem with Smith, not Rittich. Would you really prefer Halak and Smith to Rittich and Smith?

I think that goalies are unpredictable and going cheap on goalies is not a bad strategy. It may be a coincidence but all the recent cup winners had goalies they drafted and developed, so that may be the best route

He let in six, he wasn't one of our best players but he was far from one of our worst players.

You have a problem when your goalie is your worst player.
When your goalie is just "not your best player" you still have great chances.

Yes there might have been a wierd amazing night where an on-fire starter gets a shutout last night, but let's be intellectually honest - no goalie would be expect to stop most of the shots Rittich allowed. this isn't a case of Smith going behind the net for twenty seconds during a tie game trying to do his best Giordano impression... It's a case of guys being allowed to go right in on Rittich with time and space to go top shelf or back door.

It's ####ty execution.

Attaboy, Haynes. I have seen this line of thinking before.

I remember Hrudey during the SJ game saying he thought despite the 5 goals that he played well, and I thought he played fine against Tampa. Last night, not as good of a game. Goal 5 was sure ugly.

I am quite concerned about the lack of production of the offense.

One knock on Gulutzan and early concern about Peters due to his Carolina results was basically lots of shots, not enough goals. I’m not saying we are there, but post all star break a lot of the team is shooting like James Neal

The top line was shredding teams in, say, December and are really struggling right now.
