If he stays healthy, and plays until he’s 40, then he has a legitimate chance. He’s on pace for 58 this season, so if you assume he gets there, he’d need to average ~33 goals over his last 7 seasons (40yo season being his last):
19/20 - 45
20/21 - 45
21/22 - 35
22/23 - 35
23/24 - 25
24/25 - 25
25/26 - 20
That puts him at 895, 1 ahead of Gretzky.
His health is the question mark. If he stays healthy, I think he breaks the record. I think he still has a couple 50+ seasons left in him.

10 seasons of 45 goals is crazy in this day and age. It certainly would have been 12 had he not sat thru two lockouts.

The first would have been his 18yr old rookie season so not so sure he would have had 45 but the second lockout for sure.
Safe to say it screwed him out of at least 55 goals though which would have made him a lock to get 895.

The lockouts ruined a ton of records.
I’m still pissed about Iggy and Jagr getting screwed over.
Fortunately, Brodeur didn’t need those extra seasons.

He scored 52 in his rookie year. I have no doubt he would have scored 45 in his true rookie year which should have been 2005.

Or if he was born just 2 days earlier, he would have been in the NHL a season earlier. He was probably ready at that point.
It's still hilarious that the Panthers tried to draft him in the last round of the 2003 draft and argued that because of leap years, he was old enough to be drafted. I guess it was worth a try... lol.

Well, he just passed Luc Robitaille for sole possession of 12th all time in goals with 669 (nice).
Only three players in the top 20 goal scorers of all-time have less than 1100gp. Mario, Bobby Hull and Ovi.
15 behind the Finnish Flash.
I'm not sure we'll see anyone crack the top 20 in the next 25 years.

I'd say Crosby and Stamkos both have a pretty good chance to crack the 600 goal mark. Crosby needs 150 and Stamkos needs 200.

Wow you guys are boring naysayers. Hell yeah he does.
Finishes with 897 in his early to mid fourties is my prediction.
He's scoring at an unreal clip and it'll be a little while before he even dips under 30 a season with regularity.
If he averages 40 or more for the next five seasons then he'll set himself up nicely. I think he will too. If Thornton can be a 50-60 assist man in his late 30s... ovi can score at a high clip too.

Ovi has a good chance of jumping up to #7 by the end of the year. He's on pace for 64 goals and even if he only gets another 40 the rest of the year (for 51) he would be #7 overall.
He will at least attain #3, barring any injuries, by the end of next year. After that will he score more goals in the NHL? Depends if he wants to keep playing in the NHL as his contract expires after next year.

He is already the greatest goal scorer of all time, whether he beats Gretzky's total or not. Someone probably has this info but if you adjust his goal total for the era he played in, Ovechkin would possibly already be ahead of Gretzky's record.

People should enjoy every minute of watching OV play. We are literally witnessing likely the greatest goal scorer of all-time steadily climb up the goal scoring ladder. It will be tough to break Gretzky's record. If those 2 damn lockouts never happened you can likely add another 70-80 goals to the mix, which theoretically could have put him approaching 800 at age 34. Damn those lockouts so much.
And 34....damn. Time goes so fast. I remember his first season and just how electric he was when he entered the league, and how elite of a peak he had a couple seasons later. So happy he was his cup.
While I think he for sure could have broken the record if those lockouts never happened, it will be tough to do it at this point. However at age 34 he's still proving the naysayers wrong every single season by winning the scoring title so if anyone can do it, it's him.

Back to Ovechkin - it's always astounding to look at his stats: fourteen consecutive 30+ goal seasons (unadjusted). Career lows of 32 (79gp), 33 (82), 38 (78) - every other season has been 46+. Insanity.

Total - 863
AO relies on timing and a quick hard shot, after 35/36 one needs to be super human to keep the fast twitch muscles working, AO is a lot of things but he's not super human and he will loose it, I doubt he even lasts till 40 so it's mute.
