Thanks in part to this network of support — encouraging father, inspiring mother, willing mentor — he is coming of age. And not only on the ice. Feedback from Flames staffers these days is that Kylington has taken a step.

“It’s gratifying to see that they grow as humans, too — that’s something that is forgotten sometimes,” Loob said. “It’s hidden behind you being a really, really talented hockey player. But that’s not enough to make it in the big leagues. You have to understand that mature relationships with other players, with coaches, is something that you have to reach out and get. If you don’t care about relationships, it’s going to be pretty tough to have anybody respect you.”

Dad describes a similar arc of development — from the little boy who struggled with his skating, to the teenage sensation in Sweden, to the minor-leaguer in North America, to the young man earning regular spins in the NHL.

“I’m also very, very happy about the person he has become,” Borje said. “That’s something to be proud of — how he’s become such a good young man.”

Terrific article again by the Athletic. Really like their immediate feedback evaluation after each.

Flames appeared to really have done their homework on Kylington at the draft. They were able to see beyond the overconfident kid and examine how grounded he actually was as a person.

Kylington has definitely taken a step on the ice and appears to have matured as a person. Flames have 8 bonafide NHL regular Dmen on the roster. No need to add depth on D at trade deadline.

Very excited about him and all the young defensemen...

Even though Gio is having a career year, at some point, calgary will need to find his successor... with the group Hanifin, Valimaki, Andersson and Kylington, I am feeling very good about the future of the defense.

Talent wise, I think Gio's spot is taken by Hanifin or Valimaki. Leadership wise it might be Hamonic.

The athletic did a poll of 198 anonymous players in the league on best/worst city to play in, most overrated/underrated player, etc...

It's interesting to see what players think when they don't have to worry about being diplomatic.

The only Flames content is Giordano at 5th on the most underrated player list.

Top 25, maybe? doubt it.

Intersesting that Torts is tied for 3rd when it comes to coaches players would like to play for and tops for coach players wouldn't like to play for. Babcock certainly not getting love from players considering how good a coach he's supposed to be.

This doesn't surprise me. I do know several former NHL players personally and all of them cringe whenever I call Babcock the best active coach in NHL. They say that playing for Babcock was always very difficult (lots of mind games). I think there has to be some truth to it. Most players come from rural background, small town upbringing, farming communities. These kids seek simple direction and unambiguous motivation.

"Like to play for" and "good coach" overlap but are not the same. Torts is players coach for sure. I don't think he's on the level of Babcock, Q, or some others when it comes to all around coaching though.

I get what your saying but Babcock is the definition of a farm boy. Grew up in rural Saskatchewan.

I agree on Subban. He's good, but not as good as his contract, nor the hype (died down since his trade though).

I agree with all of those (though I didn't know anyone still rated Phaneuf)
