I assumed what happened is that on D-day Vegas threw in their best prospect d-man, which meant that Calgary needed to match or they were gone.
It wasn't so much that Dorian "changed the ask", it was that Calgary was outbid.

That is right, neither one of us know. However, there have been several reports and interviews, hinting at what happened.
Lots of talk of Valimaki being the deal breaker, and no talk of Stone having an ask that the Flames didn't like.

For a freaking winger...not even the best winger in the game.

I don’t think Tre ever agreed to put Andersson in the deal. Tre has said many times post deadline that he was not trading Andersson or Valimaki; however, he never mentioned Kylington.
Add the Fantenberg acquisition as a left shot defenseman to replace Kylington and it seems to make sense.
I think Flames offer was probably Kylington and the first and maybe Frolik and the Vegas package beat that.

Now that it's on capfriendly, you can see that Vegas has some serious cap issues next year, and that's before they have to re-sign Karlsson.

Mark Stone (8yrs, ~$9.5mil AAV) to Vegas for Erik Brannstrom, Lindberg, 2020 2nd
The last three or four years of that contract might hurt, especially if Stone cannot keep up his awesome play as he gets older

Taking a while to get to 5000

Would have been great to have him here, but looking at that deal I feel no sour grapes at all.

Not really that dire. Certainly not 'before they have to re-sign Karlsson."
They may want to re-sign Engelland and he'll take pretty much whatever they'll give him (say around a million). Re-sign Subban, who has 30 game experience, for maybe another million.
That's 79M, assuming Haula comes back, with just Karlsson to re-sign.
Is he the 40 goal scorer looking for a long-term contract from last year, or the 20 goal scorer RFA fighting for his contract?
Either way, they should be able to get by for the time being if they move one medium contract in the off-season.

9.5 million for 8 years for Mark Stone.
Mark Stone. Not Evgeni Malkin. Heck, even Toews is taking a LOT of heat for his contract and he’s a Selkewinning, Stanley Cup Champion Centre.
Dzingel, Zucker, Coyle, Zuccharello - that would have been great pick ups. Even Hagelin or Nyquist.
Imagine sending out Valimaki, Dube and a 1st AND THEN pay full Free Agent premium. Wow. The guy is a great player for sure, but holy #### Dorian and Stone are the winners here.

I would be horrified if the Flames gave him that contract. He's a good player right now but I won't be surprised if his numbers tail off big time in his early 30's.
