Vegas plays in our division. I have a feeling this statement will not age well. TBH I'm already pretty salty at them after the couple of BS wins they got last year.
If we play them in the playoffs, I can see them jumping to California levels of hate.

I hope their NFL team sucks...it's the Raiders!
Their Assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon would go well back with Stone, so that likely is why the VGK are willing to make this commitment to him.
There is a day coming soon where the Flames will need to be a team giving out a long term contract with huge dollars to a player. I do think Stone is a good player and that he could have helped the team. But I had a tough time seeing a team with him as the top paid player being a Stanley Cup winner.

Mind you it will pale in comparison to what they roll out once the NFL arrives in a year or so, but still worth it from many i have talked with who have done it. Im sure there are a bunch on here who will concur.
I love Vegas but am not the "stay on the strip" guy most people prefer, and a sporting event would be low on my list of things to do. This has changed that and Im hoping to catch a game there next season. (Hopefully the Flames of course)
|
I have heard this too about seeing a game in Vegas and I am a stay on the strip kind of guy. But unless the Flames were playing I just don't see myself spending an evening in Vegas going to a hockey game where I didn't really care about the result. I guess you could put a big bet on the game which would make it a little more interesting.
You can bet on Vegas home games right?

I think a lot of this was an effort to try and keep things going in the market. It is an overpay, but they probably know their current window closes as soon as Fleury starts slowing down. He is 34 now, will be 35 at the start of next year, which is not the age you want for a starting goalie.

The locals are excited about hockey because there are 41 home games a year and so there's a constant influx of new people from around the continent and there's "buzz" every night. The NFL is only 8 home dates a year.
I think the NBA will do very very well in Vegas. The NFL too but I'm not sure how much the average local will care about the team.

It would have been cool to be a fly on the wall Sunday night and Monday morning.
You have to think there were some in the Flames organization who really wanted to acquire Stone, even at that price.

Vegas likely started building their team thinking it was going to be a slow build to becoming a legit contender. They took on some expiring contracts and hoped to build their asset base further. Pretty shocking to see how many picks and prospects they have dealt to date but a SCF in year one and pretty much a playoff lock year 2 changes things.
Brannstrom, Suzuki, 2018 1st all traded. It is pretty crazy what they ended up giving up for Pacioretty in the long run because of the horrible Tatar deal (2 1st, 2 2nd, 3rd)

8M+ for Stone only made sense for a few teams (OTT, LVK, some other perennial lottery pickers). Vegas is the only competitive team who could really make it work...it just makes a lot of sense for Stone. Will be interesting to see the bonus structure.
Vegas has a lot of money and term locked into guys on the wrong side of 30, though. But I guess I respect them for staying in 'win-now' mode for the next couple years of Fleury.

I still can’t get over that Vegas paid out of their nose AND paid UFA prices. Nine. And. A. Half. Million. For eight years. At 26 he’s a below average skater, I doubt he’s getting faster.
I would love the guy on the team, but not at this cost. Good job staying away Tre. Too bad he couldn’t pick up another big body for the playoff grind though.

The onus is now on Neal or Bennett to perform at a top 6 level in the playoffs

I think Mark Stone is the perfect player for the Flames...
...but not at that acquisition cost and salary.
I'm disappointed and relieved at the same time.

Not if the contract is mostly signing bonuses. That would all be at the Nevada rate. Huge advantage.
Example Tavares only pays states tax on his paycheck which is miniscule, but would pay Ontario taxes for his huge signing bonuses each year.

I think this perfectly describes my emotional state yesterday. I think I may be more disappointed about the Zucker trade falling through than the inability to acquire Mark Stone.

Yup. I think by year 5, that contract's going to start becoming an anchor. He didn't even give them a discount for the first 4 years of the contract. I'd argue he signed for market value for the first 4 years, and then was able to sucker Vegas for 4 extra years at that price.

at this cost, I'm happy the Flames didn't do it.
The Flames have a ton of upside and a good prospect funnel. They'll be fine.

Vegas did get better yesterday with adding stone without a doubt. I still think their D is very suspect, which is why they are sitting so far back of the flames. It will be interesting to see if there defensive issues outweigh the addition of stone. I think they might still

Vegas doesn't even have to give Seattle a player...how anyone can like that team is beyond me.
They will be a top destination for NHL players forever. Same thing will happen with the NFL team. Vegas would be an amazing place to be a young multi millionaire.
Back on topic, win the division and one these divisional teams that "loaded up" will be out in round one

Couldn't they just make it that his signing bonus pays out when he's in Vegas or some other favorable tax district? There was that post about an agent saying that it's pretty easy to curtail higher tax rates, maybe that's what he meant?

The only reason I am mad about the Wild deal yesterday was the fact it was getting reported by Boom and Leslie that it was happening which would have been a thrilling end (potentially) to a boring day.
It was a bit of a zucker punch to the fans

There are provisions in Canada that make it as lucrative or more so than in some us districts.
I don't know how this contract is structured but I would assume it's a cash on hand structured deal.
Hey getbak or sureLoss or open door, do you know how tagging room played into this signing? Would Calgary have been able to satisfy the tagging room criteria by signing a 9.5 million deal with their current salary commitments next year?
