It seems unlikely for the Knights to fall to 4th in the division at this point while not also falling completely out of the playoff picture.

Agreed. Hopefully Neal turns it around next year or his boat anchor of a contract is really gonna hurt the Flames. Although, if it doesn't work out, Ottawa could be interested in taking him on if you provide another asset.

Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don't make. I think this is one of those deals. It would be bad enough losing the assets to make the deal, but the assets you would have to lose to accommodate the new deal would be very hard to stomach. Good on Tre for not making the deal.

The only way the flames could have fit stone for next year is if 3/5 of Ryan/Neal/Frolik/Brodie/Michael Stone were traded this offseasn.
That said I wish we had done something instead of missing out on every single winger out there...

With Neal having that $5.75M cap hit along with Tkachuk, Bennett and Rittich needing new deals trying to fit in the $9.5M for Stone and keeping all of those players would have been very challenging. Frolik and Brodie’s contracts could be moved but not sure if there would be enough to go around.
If the Flames could have included Neal in the deal with Valimaki and the 1st then it probably would have been worth it because keeping Stone becomes a possibility.

Now Stone is in the Pacific division for the next 8+ years. It is going to be a tough road through the west. The Flames need to keep their lead on the Pacofic and avoid having to beat Vegas and San Jose

Well if Neal actually starts showing up when he's back from injury, that can be our deadline acquisition. xD

Odds are that the Flames will have to beat one of them. They will likely have to face Winnipeg as well. Coming out of the West is going to be no easy task, but the Flames have a team that can do just that. There isn't a team in the west that scares me. The only team I don't think the Flames stack up against is the Lightning. Hopefully when we get to the Stanley Cup Finals, the Lightning have already been dispatched to the slag heap.

Friedman on 960 says Brannstrom was the best prospect offered to the Sens. When Vegas offered him up this morning they instantly became the favourite to land Stone.

Tre probably offering Kyling and then it was topped (obviously) by brannstrom. I think kyling has a higher ceiling though, just less likely to reach it.
I'm gonna say the Flames offered Kylington, 1st, Frolik and it was topped by what Vegas enviably offered. If Tre would of swapped Kyling for Vali Stone would be ours. I would not have done it though. Valimaki is as close of a sure thing to a top 4 d-man as possible and very likely to be a top 2.

So, we likely would have had to give up Vali plus a first and a roster player. Too much if the contract was also 9.5 x 8.

I would have done that if Neal wasn’t on the roster. But he is, so we are stuck with him. Who knows, maybe he comes off this LBI and gets faster somehow? Lol.

Friedman on 960 also thinks the only reason the Flames didn't get Stone was because they were unwilling to part with Valimaki.

I think you’re right, but that Kylington was never going to be enough. Given who they got, it was always going to take Valimaki.

Good. I would have not been pleased. He is Gio's replacement when he inevitably falls off. (The guy is 35 and plays all out everynight, it's gonna happen, it's nature)

Still not pleased that we didn't add a smaller piece though.

Me too. Hayes/NyQuist/Granland would have been awesome. And they were all had for a song, really. Wish we would have gotten one of them.

The point is they had a lot of talent in their development system and could lose a valuable prospect; Calgary wasn't in that position to offer our one blue chip prospect.

Nyquist is the one that would have likely been the best add. A late 2nd and a 3rd is minimal.

Think not having our 2019 second hurt us there for sure as teams would rather have those picks right away when rebuilding.

Hayes would have been okay but I'm not sure he moves the needle enough to move a 1st.

Granlund would have been nice but I'm not sure what we have that's a comparable trade chip to Fiala to get that one done. Feels like Fenton really wanted a guy he picked in Nashville.

I don't think Nyquist would have waived for us.

Maybe the Flames almost had Stone done and then Vegas offered Brannstrom

Based on what I was hearing Nashville was second in line. When we said no to Valimaki, I think we were basically out. Hence the Leslie tweet early this am that we were “99%” out.

Doesn’t seem likely for them to fall into a wild card spot especially now wit the Stone deal. Really, 2 things would have to happen. Arizona would have to go on massive heater down the stretch to catch Vegas, also if the Knights do happen to play that poorly down the stretch, it’s likely they just don’t make the playoffs at all as Dallas and Colorado would probably take the 2 wild card spots. So it’s likely 3rd in the Pacific or no playoffs at all for the Knights.
