While I don't disagree, Fantenberg is UFA at season end so I don't think this trade impacts Brodie a whole lot.

Gotta love Treliving.

Any other GM we have had in the past probably would have added significant assets to get Stone or some other highly touted forward.

Treliving gave offers for probably a lot of forwards and wouldn't budge on them. He knows that he does not have to make a move if the team that he has constructed over the years is finally paying off, as we all see in the standings.

Thank you, Treliving.

A 3rd/4th round pick does seem relatively steep for a player of this caliber.

Didn't Stempniak only fetch us a 3rd round pick right after leading the Flames in points?

Treliving made his big deadline deals a little before the deadline, that's all.

A fans perspective on Fantenberg

Quote:
dude he's a bottom-pairing defenseman. there's no part of his game that's a big weakness. there's no part of his game that's a big strength. he's a solid bottom-pairing defender. he's not a big guy, he's not particularly fast, he's not a shutdown defender, he's pretty good at moving the puck, he seems to take wrist shots from the point when he has the opportunity. he's just not a great defenseman. but he's not a bad defenseman either. he's boring, and sometimes that's a good thing on the bottom pair. he doesn't have a weakness, but he doesn't have a strength either.

Off the cuff, he kinda reminds me of Jokipakka (sp?)

Not a big piece for the future. But a guy who is older and has played in the playoffs, and can slot into the lineup in the 3rd round when Brodie injures his shoulder.

A lot of the rental prices weren't very high. Zucarello, Stone, Dzingel, Johansson, and Granlund all went for less that most expected.

Treliving seems to be acting like the prices were crazy, but they're really weren't.

Again, I didn't even want the Flames to get most of these players anyways. But Treliving's rationale seems to be a bit inconsistent with reality.
I guess that depends on the ask from the team.

I actally think the prices were pretty high. Flames didn't have the 2nd that upgrades to a first if they win a couple rounds. Is Zucarello worth 2 first rounders?

Dzingel was a pair of second rounders and Duclair. A bit much for rental.

Stone I think the teams had a trade done in principle, but fell apart at the contract extension. No way the Flames could give him the 9.5M to 11M, especially over 8 years.

Whos building it up? Everyone seems to know it's a depth move and nothing more. Settle down

I agree in that I'm not sure why you'd give up a 4th round pick for this guy, but I do think they are semi-worried about the young guys in the playoffs.

Prout is basically un-usable in the playoffs so its this guy vs Stone for the 8th man if someone gets injured.

Good depth move but I think Flames would have better off to keep Brett Kulak

Agreed.

They get points for "doing the right thing" though and finding him a home.

I'm pretty sure I'm on record on this board for wanting the Flames to get this guy just for his great name. I'm happy

Also, Kulak would have spent the season in AHL or popcorn duty, if he had stayed in Calgary. He'd maybe have Prouts 13 games.

If you want a depth guy beyond your top 6, who has spent the season playing in the NHL, you basically have to get one at trade deadline. Which is why teams are always looking for them at trade deadline (and why they're always kind of expensive for what they are).

A depth guy that hasn't been playing just in the NHL recently just isn't as valuable, even if they're otherwise pretty much the same.

So we pick Broberg or Viktor Soderstrom in this years draft. Trade Brodie at the draft for Ekholm. Later Hamonic leaves as an FA, Gio retires and we trade Hanifin for Ekman-Larsson.

Valimaki - Andersson
Ekman-Larsson - Ekholm
Kylington - Broberg
Fantenberg

It's four years from now and Valimaki has to begin every interview answering the question 'what it is like playing in the Finnish version of hell?'
