For sure, but for a team with shaky goaltending and confidence-driven scoring, the second best deffensive offensive player in the league (after Bergeron) is a pretty big add.

I'll clarify, I'm not disappointed at bowing out on Stone for the rumored cost, that is. But am at not offering the reasonable costs for other pieces.
Mind you, this is also how you bring down a price tag. Take your chips and tell them you're going home. The Peg is probably out now, so you're their best chance at getting at least a decent return for Stone. But you won't pay the top dollar that they're seeking. Maybe they cave, the last few hours will tell.

Would be funny if Stone gets traded to Vegas, they lose to us in the playoffs, then we trade Neal for cap space and pull a 2009 Red wings or 2010 Blackhawks and sign Stone in the offseason

glad we are not paying a king's ransom for a rental but bummed that San Jose got a lot better and we look to be doing nothing. Going to be tough to get out of the second round. San Jose clearly the favorite in the west IMO.

The reality is that we're the second highest scoring team in the league. Our forward group isn't perfect, but its far from being a liability. Yes, Stone would be a nice upgrade, but to ship away our only elite prospect just to bolster that group for most likely a rental just seems downright silly.

San Jose is a team making a final push with their aging core of Pavelski, Burns, Thornton with no replacements in sight. They could also lose Erik Karlsson to UFA for all they know.
We're a team emerging as elite who could still beat them, still beat Tampa, and our only aging player could one day be replaced by any one of Kylington, Hanifin, OR Valimaki.
Different sides of the window. Gotta play the long game.

Oh I hope this is true. I hope Ottawa staff read this stuff and it scares them into accepting something less than one of our awesome D prospects. I wouldn't not want to see any of those guys traded unless the player we acquire helps and is signed for at least a few seasons.
I am find with Tre staying pat and not sacrificing the future.

Sometimes doing nothing is better than mortgaging the future. Flames have a good team, no point in rushing things when we have lots of time to improve this team. Better off waiting for the right opportunity, trusting this group and see what they can do.

I know nothing is given year to year..
But IF we don't end up making a slash here today, just remember how much more ammo that gives us at next year's trade deadline.
I would like to hope we would be in a similar spot as this year - and if we keep these assets when all the teams we are fighting with are spending theirs, we'll have a leg up.
I know the FOMO feeling is real, and the immediate trades are always a ton of fun. But we have a long window here to consider.

being out on Stone doesn't mean they are out on other players...
i see a massive game of chicken going on where Ottawa could end up with nothing and the flames send in a fax at the bell and land a Tier 2 player...

It's not a guarantee. It never is.
You're betting that something that took 30 years to happen will happen in consecutive seasons. It very well could, and I hope it's a several year window like people suspect. But why put your chips on next year when you're there right now?
That's what kind of irks me. Unless they have something in the cooker here.

No one wants to admit they remember a line from Jerry Maguire.

I take it Glass and Tolvanen have to be apart of the deals to Vegas and Nashville respectively as well?
"We want two first round picks, your best prospect, and a decent roster player for pure rental Mark Stone."
Uh huh.

I think right now the Flames are out. It's like any negotiation - when you walk away you have to be prepared to actually walk away - otherwise it's a hollow threat
But that doesn't mean you don't re-engage if the other party invites you back to the table.

Moving Valimaki is clearly a non-starter. But it wouldn't be a shocker if the Sens circled back to the Flames if they have no deal for Stone late in the day and accept whatever package the Flames offered instead (which presumably included one of Kylington or Andersson). Remember, the pressure is on the Sens here. They can't let Stone walk as a UFA.
