Wow, the league actually did the right thing. Color me shocked.

This also pretty much guarantees the Oilers will lose their next 2 games, haha.

That was a piece of mercy from the League to McDavid.

The Oilers were mercilessly riding that kid into the dirt, someone had to step in and do something.

McDavid probably elbowed Leddy just to get a break.

Bob crying about it

Bob Stauffer Retweeted NHL Player Safety
Pretty ironic that a superstar player who doesn’t get protected by the Officials...gets no benefit of the doubt on a first-time infraction. There is a reason why the NBA kicks the NHL’s ass in the U.S. The NBA respects their stars...the NHL doesn’t!

My response

Bob, seriously he threw a headshot. You need to separate it from the narratives of the reffing on McDavid and the fact that he threw something that was absolutely going to get him suspended. The two are not intertwined

very surprising. Making the right decision regardless of the players involved isn't something you're used to when it comes to the NHL and their safety department.

I'm so confused about the narrative out of Edmonton around "McDavid doesn't get protected." I agree that NHL needs to crack down on slashes etc... for everyone, especially star players, but what were they expecting? For the most part this seems to be a case of misaligned expectations on the Edmonton fan and media.

Clearly they believed that McDavid, was going to get Gretzky treatment from the 80's when it came to officiating. Such an out of touch opinion, almost like they haven't watched hockey in decades. One, the Gretzky treatment from the 80's was overboard, he literally had his own rule book with essentially made him untouchable, even within the rules, which was just stupid. Two, the game has changed so much since then. In the 80's, many teams had up to two full lines of players that literally 1000 times worse then first line players. You needed to make sure those far less talented players couldn't simply even the playing field by taking liberties, so the league and officials over indexed on protecting Gretzky and the few other stars.

In today's game the difference between McDavid and the worst player in the league (as great as McDavid is) is far far less steep. Almost everyone in the NHL, can actually play this sport at a top pro level. So the need to create a separate rule book for the McDavid's of the world to play there game isn't required.

It's like Oiler fans just assumed getting the best player in the world meant he'd be able to operate in his own little bubble the way Gretzky was.............and are shocked to see that it hasn't been that way for decades, and that isn't a luxury players like Crosby got either.

They’ve been doing a great job for several years now.

Bob Stauffer, the guy that wanted Coiler players to go out and intentionally injure Flames players the next time they played after the goon tactics didn’t work the first game of the season.

I don’t know why Global employs this idiot when he also works for the Oilers Organization?

Yeah, in Edmonton they clearly think he should be held to a different standard. When I was watching the PHX game, they were commenting how you have to go after other teams best players after Larson and Keller got into it. There is definitely something in the water up there.

In a manner of speaking, yes. But what I read from Oilers fans is this expectation that because McDavid is the fastest player in the world, there is no possible way to impede his progress but to hook or to grab on to him. Their expectation is actually that he should draw a penalty every single shift by virtue of the inability of every other human being to keep up with him on skates.

The stupidity of it that the Bob Stauffers of the world just don't fricken get. If the refs called every hook and slash and hold, the Oilers slow a$$ team playing Hitch's trap system would probably spend half the game in the penalty box.

The Oilers get away with a lot of stuff just like every team does. They're not special.

Do they mean his options to play for other teams?

Also, I get support for the player, but Oilers really are showing how bush league the org is. Regardless of what you say behind closed doors, you can't publicly express disappointment in that way for a player getting suspended for a head shot. You need to politic it in a way that you say you have your players back, but you understand the need to eliminate head injuries from the game.
