I don’t think that would imapct it as that’s something that can only be structured in ontario (maybe all of Canada? Not positive)I don’t remember the exact numbers but the Matthews contract was structured that way because He is an American playing in Canada Bonuses are taxed at a rate no higher than 15% and salary taxed at regular income tax rates
This wouldn’t apply to a canadian playing in Canada
Bonuses are still paid up front but without the American playing in Canada provision I believe it’s all taxed the same.
This could actually help canadian teams with money sign USA born talent

Yeah it looks like the NHL website ranked Abramov 1st and Davidsson 3rd in the Blue Jackets prospects pool just this summer.
https://www.nhl.com/news/columbus-bl...ch/c-299682978
For what it's worth, Sporting News ranks Calgary's prospect pool 21st and Columbus's 28th.
So I'm thinking Dube + Ruzicka(?) is probably close in value.
Edit: Dube>Abramov, Davidsson>Ruzicka. I haven't seen enough of Davidsson to know who he's comparable to in our system, but just by reading some scouting reports he sounds better than guys like Zav or Phillips.

One of the first things you see when you google 'Mark Stone' is his twitter and a tweet of his that contains those fire emojis shows up. Obviously a sign.

I could see the Flames dealing for Mark Stone and then this summer extending Mike Stone for multiple years on a bargain contract to be their 3rd pair RHD option. Deal Brodie for some picks they lost acquiring Mark and roll with Hamonic, Andersson, Stone as their RHD going forward.
I could also see that being part of the appeal for Mark to sign in CGY long term as well. Along with the Flames being a legit contender throughout his prime years.

I get why the Jets want to try and get Stone and re-sign him but I'm not sure how they'd fit him in.
They have $58M committed to next year with 4 d-men, 1 goalie, and 8 forwards signed.
UFAS:
Tanev
Myers
Charot
RFAs:
Laine
Connor
Trouba
Copp
Lemiuex
Petan
Brossoit
Plus Roslovic and Morrissey expire after next season.
Guess they could give up assets for Stone, then free up salary and recoup assets by moving on from Trouba, Perreault, etc

Not quite sure how they could fit Stone in without moving other salarys out and hurting their depth.
|
Well I'm pretty sure they will let Myers walk in the offseason, and what might push them over the top in their offer for stone is dealing one or two pending RFAs.
Considering Trouba doesn't really want to play there, I could see his RFA rights being dealt in the offseason as well.
To me though, what you're describing is the edge that the Flames have. Conceivably they can take on the Stone salary much easier than the Jets can.

Woah. Wennberg's name has been in the rumor mill but could also be performance related
Tom Reed @treed1919
Hearing Alexander Wennberg is a healthy scratch. #CBJ
edit FWIW:
John Shannon @JSportsnet
Wenneberg a healthy scratch for CBJ tonight in Ottawa. Don’t read anything into it. Just a numbers game with Duchene playing.

We have 8 top 6 dmen and a decent enough #7 guy in Prout so something will have to give this offseason, not only due to the roster spots but in order to keep developing the young guys as well as freeing up some cap room.

Hmm 2013 NHL Draft...must be the Flames trying to collect all 2013 1st round draft picks again.
James Neal and a 2020 2nd for Alexander Wennberg
Honestly though if's he's on the block I'd look to try to get him as a buy low candidate ...has a Lindholm lite feel to him.

I'm okay with giving up those high picks as a signed Stone keeps us very competitive during this window.
Saying no to Kylington, Valimaki, Andersson.

Your franchise is storing up a world of hurt if it has only 2 total picks in the first two rounds over 4 drafts. You've essentially choked off the supply of entry-level players for half a decade. It means a hard, hard landing after that 3-4 season window.
And I doubt Ottawa would do straight picks anyway. They want some younger assets that can step in to play in the next 1-2 years.

First of all, the Flames are very young, these players don't just have 3-4 years left in their careers. And second, They have players they can trade if need be to restock the cupboards.

Giordano - Andersson
Hanifin - Hamonic
Kylington - Stone
Valimaki - Prout
I could see that going to training camp next season easily.

IMO, it's too late to address that.
The Flames already moved the picks that would be coming in to help during their window. But the team managed to make a franchise defining trade that somewhat neutralized that deficit spending.
If anything, I think they are justified in moving more picks now to maximize their chances before they need to rely on those young ELCs that probably won't materialize. Tkachuk and the defense are those ELCs. Time to make some hay while the sun is shining.

Pinder is sure barky. We get your stance already. You've died on your hill like three times now.
Pats patience from the years of hosting overtime is really on display here. Respect, he's not letting pinder sway him in the slightest.

Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive
#RedWings Ken Holland indicated he's not likely to sign Jimmy Howard or Gustav Nyquist in the next few days. "I would say to you that just going to see what happens on the trade front between now and Monday.”

Flames could also dip into the college free agent market to fill a gap on the blue line. Say Adam Fox? He might be more interested if he hears Brodie could be moving on this summer.
