Big win even though it was ugly at times. Didn't realize the pens were so chippy.
Magic number is down to 14.5 games to clinch a playoff spot (Canucks losses or Flames wins, they are the only team that matters since the top 3 in the division will make it unless there is something crazy happening in Arizona). Flames should easily have a spot locked up by early to mid March.

Not to mention the lucky bounces on the other 3.
Murray wasn’t in position and beaten cleanly by any shots, was he?
This game was a ‘start the car’ special for sure.
Glad for the win, but find it’s really weird what other peoples’ take home was.

So which part was the puck luck? The missed interference and high sticks by the Pens that didn't result in PPs for the Flames? The rather iffy PPs the Pens were given? The fact that the Flames NEEDED to score 5 to win? That they were at the tail end of a 4-game roadie? That Ryan broke his stick?
Really weird what other peoples' take home was...
Take the W, be happy, unclench the butt cheeks and sip on a cold beverage. All's chill. The boys busted their skid in a hard game against a very fast, cohesive, tight team. And their 5-on-5 play was pretty stellar. Enjoy.

We were definitely outplayed.
Hoping we can find the pre ASG break magic because we don’t look anything close to elite.

If you have something negative to say can you please shove it up your ass and keep it there? This place has been bad enough lately, just piss off with the negativity for one day please. Enjoy the win guys. We’re in 1st place, what more do you want?

Some people get tired of those that choose to wallow in negativity
It was an even game that the flames had the edge in five on five and the pens used a Lethal pp. but a big win regardless

Bennett is a 0.5 PPG player in 2019 while averaging under 13 minutes per game.
9 points in 18 games in 2019.
Hits. Fights. Endlessly loyal to his teammates.
Oh, and he's 22 and only getting better as games by.

You usually win when your team scores 5 goals.

Agree enjoy the win. Was very badly needed at this point in the schedule. I think it’s a matter of we all have higher expectations now and are hoping for big things from this group this year.

And Mike Smith got a win. That doesn’t fit some people’s narrative either after weeks or months of building a case against him.
Pens only looked alive when they had one more player then the Flames on the ice thanks to at least 2 very poor calls. 3pp goals, one when Tkachuk wasnt back in the zone yet. One when 3 Flames skaters had sticks and it took a pinball to get to Crosby. And when the Pens has an empty net for 1:40.

Smith being the best goalie on the ice is the bar I would set for him. He accomplished that today. I'm happy with his performance and the last two games overall.
That said, I'd like to get BSD going now. And I'd make the switch next game while Smith's confidence level is moderately high. Save it for the next time you need him to step in.

Sort of. I thought the Flames through the first two periods were playing a really good road game. They had a bad spell in the first half of the second in part courtesy of some really bad breaks and officiating, but they were good in the first period, and really good in the second half of period #2.
The Penguins pushed in the third, and that is understandable. They are fighting tooth-and-nail for a playoffs spot, are in front of the home crowd, and they still boast some of the best players in the world on their roster. This was bound to happen, but I was pretty happy with how the Flames played the final three minutes.

This is not true. Today they looked bagged, in large part because this was their fourth straight road game and they spent the last week on the East Coast. This was also their sixth road game in seven games. But beyond all that, they did look elite in Carolina, playing SJ at home, and in Vancouver. There was some suspect goaltending in the latter two games, but the rest of the team looked fine.

So happy for the win. Smith was mostly good with a few beauty saves. Ryan and Bennett were the Flames stand outs for me. Keep that beard coming in Bennett.

Not often you can give up (essentially) 4 power play goals and skate away with 2 points.
Saturday afternoon road game, in Pittsburgh to end a road trip coupled with a recent lame streak of play?
Take the two points and reset at home. No need to dwell on this one.

No, they really weren't.
1st period was about as good a road period as you could have asked for.
2nd was weird, as the Pens looked like they were taking over during the middle part of the period. But the Flames pushed back and outscored them 4-1.
3rd was good 5 on 5, but the Flames ran into penalty trouble again which swung momentum in the Pens' favor. And the trailing team always pushes hard in the dying minutes to try and tie it. Flames were clearly gassed by the end and battled hard to hang onto the win. It was a tough road game in a tough building against a desperate team trying to cling to the last wildcard spot in the east. Overall a strong, gutsy effort by the Flames IMO.
The 1st line is definitely struggling though. Those guys need to pick it up.
