Team is suddenly lacking the killer instinct they had for the previous couple of months. They're not floating, but they're not finishing.

Im trying to stay positive but the jaded Flames fan in me has been waiting for this team to come crashing back down to earth.
Everything was going too good. Figures that just when i start to believe they fall apart and cant win a ####ing game anymore.

This was a game we'd easily win in January. Gio or Tkachuk would have scored in OT on their rushes, on Backlund in tight in the 3rd when Tkachuk set him up in the slot.

Lol we said that about quality shots coming last year... never happened

Panthers 3 Flames 2 SO loss
The team looked elite for pretty much the entire season up until the all-star break, to think they would play like that all season wasn’t realistic. They built up a nice cushion at the top of the division which is important, now that San Jose is seeming to hit their stride as we’re slumping (the opposite of which happened prior to the break). If they’re going to slump I’d prefer now vs. limping into the playoffs. Our top offensive players are snakebitten, especially Tkachuk. Rittich has been below average for a couple of weeks now (Smith was great tonight hopefully he can keep that rolling), the PP is struggling and they’ve run into 2 hot goaltenders. No reason to think things won’t improve, they just have to fight through the slump. Peters seems to have a really good pulse on the team, he’ll get them out of this. The fact that they’ve lost 5/6 and still hold the division lead is huge.

Sure, but this team was generating non stop high danger chances and scoring almost at will very recently. There's at least some justification for expecting that to come back.
But sure, "lol".

Why am I suddenly excited about Saturday's game? Too many storylines at play.
- End 4-game slide by playing who else? Pittsburgh.
- 9-1 revenge in effect?
- Show Connor how it's done.
- 1st of 2 straight matinee games.
- How can they play without lucky charm Neal?
- Can Tkachuk overcome the worst stretch of his hockey career?
- Will Rittich become every opposing team's itch again?
Find out this Saturday morning. Only on Sportsnet West.

Meh. This is why we needed to bank as many points as we could earlier in the year. Especially facing lesser teams. Just need to keep pushing — it’s not a slump until you’re losing by 3 or more on multiple nights...
PS if Neal is out, have we completely given up on Czarnik? Wondering if he isn’t this year’s Lazar from last year — not good enough to play now but too good to put on waivers and lose for nothing...

I will answer that question.
He was thinking that Andrew Mangiapane was the single most productive U22 player in the entire AHL a year ago, so he has earned an opportunity to play at a higher level, as had four of the other five U22 players on other teams to produce at a PPG or better:
Dylan Strome
Daniel Sprong
Jack Roslovic
Mike Amadio
have also received fair opportunities to do so.
He was with consideration of this success thinking that U22 production in the AHL has a steady correlation with future NHL success, so patience should perhaps be exercised rather than knee jerk reactions. Especially in a league where the current best team in the league has employed undersized AHL stars like Tyler Johnson, Yanni Gourde, and Jonathan Marchassault to surprising degrees of success, while the best player in the last decade of NHL has himself been glued to another former AHL star in Jake Guentzal.
Additionally, he was thinking that expectations of anyone playing a 4th line role should be tempered with respect to counting stats as even star NHLers like Joe Thornton, Brad Marchand, and Martin St. Louis were not highly productive in that role.
Further, he was thinking that Mangiapane's previous shooting percentage of zero prior to three games ago would not be a sustainable event given the sheer quality of his shot release, in addition to his knack for getting himself open.
As well, he was thinking that Mangiapane's two-way play has been markedly improving as he has spent time in the NHL, as is typical of players adjusting to the speed of the NHL game, and there is a developmental need for him to play and compete at and against NHL speed.
Finally he was thinking that the rules behind Alan Quine's waiver exemption affected his own flexibility should Quine's play diminish, as losing Quine to waivers would be undesireable.

I actually think I would prefer playing Vegas over the Stars or Blues. Second in the Pacific might not actually be too bad in the grand scheme of things.

Was thinking the same thing.
In first you might land WC Blues who will go into the playoffs on a tear, or even Dallas who you've lost every meeting with because Benn and Seguin have your number.
Vegas might not be so bad. The most threatening thing there is MAF. No skaters with Flames-killing history there (yet).

The shootout is such a confidence thing. If you don't/have never had success your going in tight.
Put the guys in who've scored on the night, it does wonders when you go in on the goalie after already beating him in the game.
It should have been Monahan, Janko, Lindholm.

The Blues are probably running away with a divisional spot. My guess on the wild cards would be Dallas and Chicago. Perhaps Vegas is the better opponent in the first round, even if we've had Chicagos number lately.

As great as mangiapanne is playing. He Ryanand czarnik are all allergic to the boards and will be our downfall in the playoffs. Starting to think flames are not really that close and this window may slam shut
