Oilers and Sekera spoke after last night’s AHL game and agreed he’d benefit from two more games. Will formally ask NHL for two game extension today.
If by ‘he’d benefit’ they mean they’re screwed cap-wise, I agree. The NHL better say no.

I agree that they should say no, but I doubt they will. It is just two games. I wonder what the math is on that for the cap hit to the team.
Does this mean they have to send some guys down to bring Sekera back? Aren't they excited to have a top 4 dman join the team?
I guess we will see.

Sekera hasn't been a good D man in about 3 years. 2 major injuries and Father Time will not have improved that at all.
2 extra games in the AHL just buys them more time to try and figure out how to get under the cap. They are basically screwed... they'd either have to send multiple players down and play short handed (like that would really matter considering the crap they have for players) or trade someone for virtually no return as I don't see other GMs wanting to help out this loser franchise any.
Yet another example in a long LONG list of E=NG.

As if Sekara 100% healthy and only 50% game shape isn't an upgrade on someone on that blueline is beyond me. BS if they grant it.

Just put Sekera on waivers and and leave him there. That's how they roll anyways.

This is the rebuilt team. This is the finished product. A tank would imply that the management is selling off their best assets for futures, which isn’t true. I don’t think the players ever tank themselves.
This team is just straight up awful.

I'm trying to recall if Edmonton ever actually tanked or if they have always just been bad. The year they got McDavid they didn't tank.

Yeah. There’s GM level tanking, then player level giving up.
From the GM kevel, they arguably STARTED tanking AFTER they got McDavid.

this does bug me a bit. I would fine with them extending him on a conventional conditioning stint (which as I understand it and am welcome to be corrected) means a veteran can keep playing in the AHL without waiver concerns but has to count against the cap and roster limits- at this point I'm sure they have figured out that he will be coming back (which is the point of this special stint isn't it?) and now they are just trying to avoid a cap crunch that they could have predicted was coming all season long

Oilers should just trade him. Going to be easier to move (I think) than Benning or Petrovic because Sekera has at least some value (albeit not much).
Honestly Edmonton should just put their cards down on the table, fold, wait out salary hell for a couple yearse, apologize to fans for the OBC and everything up until this point, and give them all free tickets the rest of this season and possibly next.

Sekera probably doesn’t mind extending his stay in Northern California and avoid the bitter cold outdoors in Edmonton and the tire fire that is the team on the ice. No point in rushing back to a lost cause when you can enjoy February in wine country.

It's pure Chiadenfreude that the ridiculous trades that brought in Manning and Petrovic have now handcuffed the Oil from bringing in a defenceman that can actually play in your lineup. Another instance of the Oilers doing nothing > Oilers doing something... and they keep doing it!

At his cap hit and injury history, not to mention his level of play when he actually did play the last couple years? No, I'd say he has negative value. Not as much as, say, Lucic... but still negative value.
Honestly, who on the Oilers doesn't? McDavid (although you could certainly argue he is probably paid a $1m too much), Drysaddle (definitely paid too much to be a complimentary winger to McD), and Nuge (decent dollar finally for an OK 2nd line center or very good 3rd line center). You could maybe take a flyer on Klef (not overpaid necessarily, but a decent number 3 and made of glass) and Nurse (overpaid for what he is today, and you'd have to believe you could turn him into something more than an average bottom pairing guy).
Really, I wouldn't take a single one of their D for any of the top 7 D Calgary has, and they only have 3 forwards anyone would take at all.

Even Nuge is maybe $500K too much for what he brings. He's a 3C on this team - or maybe you could put him on the 2nd line wing instead of Frolik. Same with Nurse. I'd take either of them with a smallish salary retention. I'd take Talbot for cheap. Or Koskinen. I think either guy could be OK as a backup or 1B with Rittich.
I think Draisaitl is a good player - not quite elite. He'd actually be a pretty good fit on the first or second line here. But at a proper salary, which means less than what you'd give Stone, who I think is a much better all around player. They will never be able to move him because he throws every team's cap out of whack.

For cap relief and getting rid of contracts, Sekera should be flipped ASAP. He's going to get an inflated value during the trade deadline (as most players do because teams need to load up for the playoffs). He may have been injured but he is a proven top-four defenseman and an upgrade for many playoff-bound teams looking to fill that 3-6 spot.
Even at last years trade deadline, Ian Cole was flipped for a 3rd and a prospect, and has basically the same contract as Sekera ($1 million less). Cole isn't even that good, but he got a good price at the deadline. I am sure the Oilers would be thrilled with a similar return. Brandon Davidson was also flipped for a 3rd, and he's no good.
If there is any time to flip Sekera, it is now. The Oilers don't have Manning, Petrovic or Sekera currently in the lineup, so flipping him - even for minimal value - would make a ton of sense to relieve cap pressure.

At this point, do you think that Oilers office has sat down with McDavid and said Hey Connor, we’re going to need you to be patient, we have a big pick coming in this year’s draft and it will change how the oilers seasons will go.
We all know that they are probably gonna tank and get 1st overall again. I’m sure hall and everyone else has heard the same bull shot over the years.

The problem with attempting to flip Sekera is that he has two more years left on a contract he won't be able to live up to. Nobody's taking that on to add depth for a playoff run this year. You can't really compare it to Cole last year who was making less than half of Sekera's contract and that contract was expiring at the end of the year so Cole was a pure rental.

Sekera has a NMC which severely limits options and return in a trade. It would be very difficult to move him.

You are right, Cole was making less last year. That said, Sekera has proven to be a top-four defenseman and could be a flip if the Oilers are willing to take a boat anchor for next year at a smaller contract and one less year. Additionally, some teams may panic and realize they can have a proven depth defenseman at a minimal price. I am sure he would waive his NMC to play elsewhere too.
There are scenarios that can play out where Sekera gets moved. I stand by that.
