Ferland at anywhere near 5mil per with term is Chiarelliesque. Stay away. We already have the Neal anchor. Can’t afford another one.
Love the idea of adding Williams though.

No thanks to Ferland. He is a spare part.

Well that’s an exaggeration. Even if he didn’t play for the rest of the year he’d easily get a NHL deal
next year, although not nearly as lucrative.

Someone is paying him 5*5 next year. Crazy imo.
My money is on Pitt acquiring as a rental this year. They are in desperate need of help for Malkin.

If he goes to the Pens and plays in their top 6 he's going to get an even bigger contract next year than I thought

I've been advocating for a Ferland trade up until now, but I've changed my mind.
Treliving dispatching Ferland, Gulutzen and Hamilton was addition by subtraction for the culture of the team. That compounded with addition by addition (Hanifin, Peters, Lindholm) has put the Flames over the top through 50 games played.
He should look somewhere else - Kreider, Hayes, Simmonds, Stone, Williams, Kronwall, McElhinney, Mzarek... Those are my picks for pickups this deadline.
I suspect Treliving will be shrewd, and look for term, or bargains like older players or pending UFAs with little league-wide interest for depth... we'll soon see!

Players I want the Flames to look at picking up;
Hayes, Kreider or Nyquist
All these players have speed, good size (except Nyquist) and skill. Exactly what Tkachuk needs on his line. Speed being the most critical element that of the 3. Tkachuck's is not the fleetest of foot and picking up a guy who can really back off the defence, will only give him that much more room to operate.
Tkachuk - Backlund - Kreider (solid blend of skill, speed, grit and 2 way players)

yeah i tend to agree... while i am a big Ferland fan, he can be a tad streaky and I am not sold on his ability to drive a line...he's more of a shooter, which is great if you have people to distribute the puck to him, but on the 3rd line, the player i want would be someone that can generate offense through speed...
not sure how fleet hayes is, but Kreider and Nyquist could put teams back on their heels. I'd add Dzingle in there too...
ultimately though, its all about acquisition cost...
I don't think calgary will do anything major, but who knows.

Hayes is not slow, but I don't think that he is much, if any faster than Tkachuk.
Kreider and Nyquist are definitely fast skaters, but I think that the acquisition cost would be too high for the Flame's Cap.
Expiring contracts
From the Calgary Flames roster:
UFAs: Hathaway, Prout, & Smith.
RFAs with arbitration rights: Bennett & Rittich.
RFAs without arbitration rights: Tkachuk & Mangiapane.
From the Stockton Heat roster:
UFAs: Peluso, Hogstrom, & Taromina.
RFAs with arbitration rights: Lazar, Foo, Rychel, Lomberg, Quine, Graovac, Healy, and Valiev.
RFAs without arbitration rights: Pollock & McDonald.

The main thing I do hope for is a buyers market, so if we do decide to go big or even just a few tweaks maybe it won't cost us so much

I would love to see Wayne Simmonds on the team. Another sandpaper player would be nice.

In his latest article, LeBrun says the Flames are passing until further notice on Ferland after the ask included a 1st round pick.

He's a replacement level player. That would be a Lance Bouma 2.0 contract.

I was one of the few supporters of Hathaway in the off-season but I agree that a 3 year deal is too long. Maybe a two year deal at $1.1 million per season is fine. Gives you the option to bury the entire contract if needed.
