It's going to be tough for San Jose to make any big deadline deals because they've already traded away their next two first round picks for Kane and Karlsson.

And the only real asset prospect wise that would intrigue the Blue Jackets would be Ryan Merkley. They'd need to send a good NHL player back if they want a chance at Panarin.

Package anderssen for a potential young core asset. I just do not seem him being highly effective due to his skating.

depends... a lot of teams were leery of Merkley before the draft...

not sure what columbus thoughts were on him and whether he's matured since he was drafted

Not sure what their cap is like, but the Sharks will probably end up signing a key UFA this summer like Duchene to go along with eventually re-signing Karlsson and then NEVER. GO. AWAY.

So trade Anderssen for another player like Anderssen?

The lack of 1st round picks will likely catch up with them. Older teams eventually fall off the edge of the cliff. It's just a matter of when it all catches up with them.

The Sharks problem next year is how many of their present guys are up for renewals: Karlsson, Joe P., Joe T., Donskoi, Meier. And they are in a position where they can't move anyone now, because they are a contending team. One or both of the Joes are moving on, I bet. How much would you pay a 40 year old Thornton? He still can play. Or a 35 year old Pavelski?

Now, if you cut both of the Joes loose, there's $11M for more players and Erik.

I think Burns and Vlasic are going to be deals that aren't profitable pretty soon. Maybe even Couture's contract is going to be a bad one going forward. Really, the only great value they have is Hertl, if he keeps up his present pace.

I hope so but I will believe it when I see it as they've only really had one down year in the last 15 or so seasons.

Yep. The Shars have bought themselves some time with recent trades but it's inevitable in the coming years it will all fall apart as Burns won't be able to carry them forever.

The San Jose Sharks have made the playoffs almost every year since they existed. I'll believe their decline when I see it.

People might hate this idea but I think Kovalchuk being available presents us with a unique chance to dump Neal with minimal assets added.

I think he can play well for a playoff run (he steps up in big games and is a more complete player than Neal) and then go back to Russia after year 2 of his front loaded deal.

Neal at his best was a one dimensional player. He’s completely lost that dimension. Kovalchuk is a diva but a proven playoff performer who steps up in big games.

Could be a unique opportunity to both improve the team and lower the long term cap commitment if Kovy would waive the NMC for a chance to win

Craig Custance has Calgary at #4 on his top 5 destinations for Panarin

https://theathletic.com/806008/2019/...-destinations/

What scares me about this is what is Calgary offering up to land him? Obviously our 1st will be included but would hate to sell the farm on a guy who is probably heading to FA and getting a contract we won't be able to afford

That tweet didn’t say we were after Panarin, it said Ryan Miller who wouldn’t cost much

He is already highly effective and he is still really young. No way you move Andersson unless that young core asset is an overpay.

Neal is not going anywhere, not sure why people are still including him in trade posts.
