Could you imagine those matchups?
NBC might be calling Katz themselves if this possibility ever surfaced

I don’t think trading for him would ultimately make the panthers better if they had to give up the major pieces it takes to get him. I’ve suggested in the past something like:
To Florida:
McDavid
To Edmonton:
Ekblad
Barkov
1st round pick
Alternatively, I could see the oilers try to dump Lucic in the trade... which would probably remove the 1st round pick going back their way.

I’d like to see him waste his potential in Edmonton for the remainder of his career and never win a thing. The stench of the Oilers is on him...

I agree. If I'd like to see CM go anywhere it's to a team directly competing with the Leafs. If he can help a team in that division get in the way of the Toronto hype machine's dreams and waste their limited window of having all their guys under the cap. There would be his best use.

How many rebuilds between now and the one the trade will trigger?
NYI, NJ or Philly. IDK why.

Really? You've developed that much of a hatred for him? I'm curious why? Oilers have been pretty miserable ever since they got him. 1 playoff appearance. He's never played Calgary in the playoffs or has done damage to us that made us miss the playoffs or something. Not like Gretzky scoring playoff series clinching goals against us, OT playoff goals, scoring countless hat tricks, huge games etc. He's not a "Whiner" like Gretzky etc I personally as a Flames fan don't have a gteat hatred against him he's never done anything against us to make me hate him that much.

I wouldn’t mind him in Buffalo. They’re pretty much Canada. They’ve been generally mediocre for almost 50 years. And they’re in the east so we wouldn’t have to face him as much

Another vote for Philly.. and the awkward conversation with McDavid asking JR's permission to wear 97.
As much fun as this would be, providing endless opportunities to troll the Kool Aid crowd... he's not going anywhere.

Eichel
Mittelstadt
Ristolainen
1st
2nd
for
McDavid
Lucic
It would have to be that kind of return, I'd think

Does the US National Guard have a team? He could learn to play real defense

He can pretty pick and choose where he goes.
Rangers or Kings would be my guess.

Nowhere but Edmonton. He had the option to do what Matthews did and sign for 5 years. He fully agreed to an 8 year deal. You you pants, you sit in it.

Philly because they deserve it after having to endure Crosby and Lemioux for years. They kind of remind me of the Flames. Both play in the same state/province as the other team and are the nicer cities but the other city has been gifted 2 generational talents (Crosby/Lemioux and Gretzky/Mcdavid) and get all the hype while the other 2 teams try to build properly.

That seems about right as far as a trade that makes sense for both teams. Only problem is the cap crunch from taking on Eichel puts the oilers in the similar spot they are already in. I think the oilers would have to get cap relief from the deal as well as getting replacement scoring.
The Florida trade proposal I gave earlier does not look nearly good enough now that I think about it more. What about this:
To Florida:
McDavid
Lucic
To Edmonton:
Barkov
Ekblad
Trocheck
1st round pick
2nd round pick
The cap is pretty much a wash between the two teams. I think this makes the panthers a worse team overall but they get arguably most marketable player in the game... more potential to sell tickets and boxes in their building. The oilers spread out their scoring, get a youngish top 2 defenseman, and some picks that could be really high considering the fact that Florida would be gutting all of their depth for McDavid.

Counterpoint:
They potentially ruined Lindros by ignoring he had concussion problems and he was probably a Crosby level generational talent before injuries.
Places where I think he would be interesting to see - St.Louis, Nashville, Columbus. Not in a Canadian market where the fan base and media coverage would be annoying, but american markets that have good support for their teams.

That's why I had Lucic in there as well.
This deal would mean about $4m less in Cap hit than current for the Oilers, I think - with more top roster spots filled.

If he was to be traded, it wouldn't be any time soon. And would probably be to an eastern team.
I would think that most current stars, ie: Crosby, Giroux etc....would be on the decline of their carreers.
If he was to be traded to a team tomorrow, seeing him in Dallas would be fun, if they were able to keep their stars.
