Very excited. Pizzolatto seems to be very self-aware of the shortcomings of season 2 and it sounded like he wanted to get more focused on what made this show so great in season 1.
Still going to be hard to top those 8 episodes. It really was a masterful bit of television.

He hired Carey Fukanagwa?

Reviews pretty mediocre so far, basically calling it a lesser version of season one. I don't know, I think I'd rather have the over the top badness of season two than a lesser season one, but we'll see.

The bar was set so high with season 1, that pretty much anything that comes after it will be a lesser version. That first series was lightning in a bottle, and you probably won't get anything that good again.
I thought the first couple of episodes were pretty solid. It didn't have the attention-grabbing feel that the first season did, but I think going forward I need to stop myself from comparing the two. Of course it's awful hard when it kinda feels like a bit of a cinematic carbon copy from season 1. The lighting, the storytelling techniques, even the trips and conversations in the car.
The performances so far have been outstanding, and the setting has that dreadful, dreary, gritty feel that was lacking from last season (the over the top noir stuff was hard to stomach).
I'm optimistic about this season. Good start.

Episode 2 really got me into the show. So far they're on track and not over-complicating things. Although sometimes it does feel like a bit unoriginal because of how similar it is to season 1
Watched the first episode tonight. I like it so far. The cinematography, atmosphere, the music, and the dreary setting definitely remind me of S1, which is ok by me. The story and characters are pretty compelling so far, and the acting is solid.
Really enjoying this season.
Has been ages since I watched season 1, so thankfully my mind isn't comparing every scene to that one like it seems to be for some.
The acting, pacing and overall feel are very good IMO.
I'm surprised this isn't getting more discussion on here. I think this season has been great. I have mostly been behind and afraid of spoilering myself so I have had to stay out of the thread.
I think the multiple timelines storytelling is working well and I think its getting to the point where they have set up these characters and are going to start putting in the twists. Already most of the main characters seem complex and not straight good or bad. There is a lot of nuance and justification behind their motivations.

Usually I'm indifferent to individual characters' dramas (who's sleeping with who, bad blood, family, etc), but I find with True Detective it is actually a substantial part of the intrigue and story.
I'm just so happy that the True Detective we fell in love with is back.
