That may be what you get now. About 8 years

I'm pretty sure Matthews is already in his prime now and certainly will be for the next five seasons. If you're getting 8 years of elite production out of a first overall pick what more can you ask?

I would much rather have Matthews/Tavares at 22.5M than McD/Drai at 21

Seems like a big failure for the Leafs honestly.

I don’t see much of a discount and Matthews goes right to UFA. Fifth highest cap % signing EVER and it doesn’t include a single UFA year? Dubas is 2 for 2 on losing his RFA signings

Chiarelli’s best move was somehow convincing Connor to do 8 years. Matthews is set to be UFA 2 years before McDavid for $1M less in cap hit

Five years is still a long time. 410 regular season games. That said, the pressure is on now to win a cup. Every year they flounder will appear to be more and more crucial.

5 year deal means they bought one UFA year.

Dude wants to cash in as a UFA big time. Him and his agent probably figure the cap will be much higher in 5 years. Cash in big on your RFA contract. Even bigger for the UFA contract in a shorter time. They're gambling he'll remain healthy by then, big risk to turn down guaranteed UFA years money. But a worthwhile gamble IMO.

Will the Coyotes stay in Arizona for another 6 years?

I hope Matthews can stay healthy. I feel like that's his only weakness

Wow, this contract looks brutal. Only buying 1 year of UFA at $11.5M. The perils of picking these hyped 1st overall superstars. You get 1 ELC and then you go into cap hell afterwards. This pretty much sets the market for guys like Marner, Rantanen, Aho, Laine, Point and our Matthew Tkachuk. Hopefully Treliving can work his magic and get Matty to a reasonable 6-7 year deal.

Finding diamonds in the rough like an Eric Staal in free agency or a high performing PTO is going to be key to finding value in the future.

This makes McDavid's deal look better which I dislike the most about this.

Why? Oilers suck because of depth....McDavid and Drai alone will easily outscore those two

Flames top line better value than either

Well the guy has been basically been perceived as McDavid East, so naturally his contract is around the same.

Not sure what this means for his next UFA contract though, these things could be pushing the $13-15 million/year mark, especially with a new CBA around the corner.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Hearing TOR and Matthews closing the extension. Will be five years, between $11.5-11.7 AAV

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
The Auston Matthews contract extension is done. Should be announced today. Five-year deal. The AAV I believe is somewhere between $11.5 million and $11.7 million...

Matthews and Tavares both play centre, and neither play with each other outside the powerplay.

The Oilers could have depth if they weren't run by fools. The cap is over $80M. Lucic, Spooner and Russell combine to make less than Hall and Eberle. You may not be the deepest team in the league, but you can be something less than embarrassing.

Paying stars in their 20s is not a problem. Paying stars in their 30s like they're in their 20s becomes a big problem very quickly.
