[Trade] Pens trade Sheahan, Brassard, 2nd, 2x4th to FLA for Bjugstad and McCann

Key for FLA is shedding salary commitments beyond this season, getting flexibility to potentially take a run at pending UFAs Artemi Panarin and Sergei Bobrovsky. Key for [PIT] was turning expiring contracts into younger contract players without taking an immediate step back now.

The Panthers are already working on moving Brassard elsewhere, though not sure anything's imminent on that front right now. He will be moved again at some point before trade deadline.

McCann: GP 114 G 17 P 46 (22 years old, $1.25M next season)
Bjugstad: GP 114 G 24 P 61 (26 years old, $4.1M for two more years)

for

Sheahan: GP 130 G 18 P 41(27 years old, UFA)
Brassard: GP 112 G 30 P 61 (31 years old, UFA)

So the stats are pretty similar the last two years. But you get way younger, a lot more upside, and more contract control. At the cost of a 2nd and 2 4ths. I honestly could see McCann working well on a wing with Crosby too. Lots of speed there.

I'd be shocked if Florida isn't just flipping Sheahan and Brassard as UFAs. Do think they will try to go after Panarin, and Bobrovsky in the offseason.

And depending on what Florida can pick up for Brassard and Sheahan this might not be a bad trade for them either. Although it's weird they gave up on 26 year old Bjugstad, getting Panarin and Bob would be stellar.

I like it for Florida as they clear cap room to make a splash this summer and move Bjugstad who at 4.1M is not an ideal fit or contract especially with Barkov and Trocheck down the middle. He is terribly inconsistent, slow, and injury prone.

Brassard should net another 2nd rounder or 3rd + prospect as well.

Makes sense for both team's. Good hockey trade.

Bjugstad is not that good, clears space for Florida to take run at Panarin/Bobrovsky as is being rumored. Big win for Fla.

Yeah that's my guess too.

Doubt Luongo gives two ####s about the $1M per year left on his contract, or the cap recapture penalty that will hit Vancouver.

My guess is he retires this off-season.

You can call it a big trade if you want but, Brassard is the only player that amounted to much of anything they were expected. McCann and Sheahan are on their 3rd teams. Bjugstad hasn't panned out like expected. FLA gets a lot of picks back so they win this IMO. Brassard most likely gets flipped again.

Just for fun, how much recapture penalty will the Canucks have to absorb if 7uongo retires after this season?

In today's NHL I wouldn't consider a guy like Bjugstad to be all that young anymore. 26 year old forward will be 27 next year, and not exactly blessed with foot speed to burn. With how the game is trending, I have to think we will see a lot less forwards who stay in the league past the age of 30 than what we are used to.

I'm sure there are analytics that support whether or not he's a fit in Pittsburgh or not. But I have no idea what they are.

This feels like a less extreme version of the trade that happened in the NBA yesterday so the Knicks could open up a ton of cap space in the summer

Would he really be though?

He is producing less than Jankowski and similarly to Ryan while getting caved in possession wise. Not really anything I would want to give up any asset for. He has name value from his days in New York and that's about it.
