Bold move by Peters, can't say I like it very much.

I will still take 10 of 13 from my back up goalie.

Sports Select Info
Flames Win = 2.2
Shootout = 3.5
Capitals Win = 2.3
Over 6.5 = 1.9
Under 6.5 = 1.55

Weird to see the Flames as road favorites against the Stanley Cup Champions. Likely a great night for the over as well with the rust from the break plus Smith & Holbty's GAA this season.

Flames take it 5-3. Would like to see our third line do a ton of damage tonight and hopefully our deadline acquisition can be the James Neal we paid for this summer (the 25G guy).

A big show of faith in Smith. However, one might also say a show of lack of faith in Rittich. I know Rittich hasn't been as good over the past handful of games, but it doesn't feel fair to me.

That said, I have to show some faith in Peters based on his performance this season. In particular, he has really had a finger on the pulse of his team. I will just trust that he does with this decision as well.

Rittich is likely on concussion protocol after taking one off the head in practice.

Maybe they think they can capitalize Smith playing the puck against these guys. Might be able to catch them sleeping and will also be a major pain in the ass if they try to dump it in.

Default They're back! Flames @ Capitals, 5:00 PM on Sportsnet West

Maybe Peters thought it was unfair for Ovy to miss the game, so he’s just evening the playing field by spotting the Caps a free goal or two.

Looking forward to the barn burner.

This may be as simple as Smith looked much sharper in practice yesterday so Peters called his number.

Practice matters to coaches...a whole bunch.

Most realistic answer.

I also feel like this is a bit of a slight to rittich, which I hate.

I like it. If Smith wants to be a big part of this year's run, he has to step up and show that he's up for it. If he takes advantage of those chances, then great. If he craps the bed, Tre has time to find a replacement.

Smith starting is probaly more of a test to see how reliable he can be as a goalie for a playoff run. If he $#!+s the bed in his opportunities over the next 3 weeks, they will have to trade for a competent backup.

If Ritter isn't practicing hard and showing he's ready to take over the starters net though, I can see why Peters went with Smith.

I think at this point Peter's deserves some trust in his goaltending decisions.

The Sunday afternoon game in Carolina is a short turnaround as well. Perhaps Peters is treating is like a back-to-back and really wants to win in Carolina?

Pat Steinberg @Fan960Steinberg
Mike Smith starting for Calgary tonight in Washington. Braden Holtby goes for the Caps. Coach Peters says Rittich likely goes Sunday in Carolina.

Peters points to puckhandling as a big reason why Smith goes tonight. 9-2-0, 0.903 SV% in his last 11 starts. #Flames

Have to believe that the Canes feel like they were robbed in their game against Calgary right before the break. They were quite a bit the better team, so Peters may feel he will get their best on Sunday.

I'm ok with Smith starting. After these 2 weekend games, they are again on a 4 day break between games.

Good to get each guy a start.

I also think with the deadline 3 weeks away, getting Smith some time to build his, the team's, and management's confidence will be key. I get the feeling that has a lot to do with Rittich's confidence so i just don't see the flames looking at goalie options at the deadline.

I would think that would rule him out from being backup.
