My daughter just started learning to skate, showing her the videos of the female skaters was extremely important moment for us.

Role models that one feels some level of likeness to, in any way, is so important.

My cousin is a big NBA fan but doesn't follow the NHL at all. She asked me at our Christmas family dinner if there were any female referees in the NHL since there are some in the NBA. I told her no and my wife asked why not. I guessed it was because they aren't fast enough to keep up with the play.

We had another family dinner on Sunday and I definitely ate some crow with my mashed potatoes.

The flat out truth seems a little cold and unnecessary. Bad suggestion IMO.

Sometimes not having an answer is totally okay. A simple "I'm not sure" and a discussion is fine. She'll eventually figure it out one day on her own but a quick "That's a good question" and an "I don't know" works fine. Parents don't always have an answer, and you don't need to pretend to either.

This so great to read/hear, any dad who discourages their daughter should be ashamed to be honest. These girls showed that they can compete at least when it comes to speed at an NHL level, they skated better than some regular NHLers.

Always encourage you daughter to the best she can and if she has that extra drive, then nothing is impossible.

That’s so true. I have a young daughter as well and I think it’s important to show that their achievements are not second fiddle. Even though the earning potential in professional sports (except maybe tennis) isn’t there for female sports, they need to be equally honoured and given the proper accolades and prestige.

Really OT, but this is why I hate most Disney cartoon films where the the female characters are always trying to earn respect and love from male characters as if they need it for validation. Luckily my daughter loves Moana. It’s one of the few where the female character is strong and there is no love interest with the male character. It’s a good movie for girls to watch.

I told them hockey is traditionally a men's game, and the NHL happens to be popular, but that the sport has changed radically over the years, so who knows what can happen in the future.

Is the truth about why woman don't play in the NHL really that bad? One would think you could parlay talking about the reasons they don't with the fact there is an up and coming womans league that has been growing rapidly over the last while.

Disney has altered that traditional approach for the most part.
Moana, Frozen, Tangled, Brave and others all have strong female characters that are heros and save themselves for the most part.

Brave in particular is a great movie to watch with your daughter - if you haven't already.

Yeah, as the father of two daughters, I don't think this is a problem these days...the vast majority of all Disney characters are strong female characters. Hell, I think these days you're more likely to have trouble finding a strong male role model.

He made some comments during an interview with Kendall Coyne Schofield yesterday, who participated in the All Star skills comp, and issued an apology today.
