I think it's more that the two teams don't want to give him a contract at the rumoured $5 Million mark.

Ferland is a desired commodity but the question is price.

Mark me down as someone who would like to see us pick him up for a playoff run rental.

Ferland would be an interesting option but his inconsistency and injury history has to worry anyone who trades for him.

With speculation that Carolina will trade him asap because they're afraid of him getting injured before they can recoup any assets, it has to make you think that at least one team out there doesn't really believe in him.

The reported asking price by Carolina seems a bit much and then Ferland's reported contract ask has to raise eyebrows as well. Sure, he may have chemistry with the guys on the team but that doesn't mean other players won't (or don't already). It's apparently a buyers market and with the amount of skilled players reported to be available I just don't see Ferland as teams first option. There are a lot of players I'd prefer the Flames to pick up before him but if they can get him for not a lot or if they end up missing out on others and he's the last option I don't think I'd be too upset. After looking at things, I think I'd prefer Simmonds over him at this point (that could change in a few hours) for the lower 2 lines. IF they're looking at adding a top 6 forward, I really don't think he's the best option

I could see the flames going into the trade deadline with a “budget” in terms of what picks and prospects they are willing to spend on a rental. I would guess that the top of that budget for a rental player is something like next year’s 2nd round pick + Eat Bread/Phillips. Not to say they will pay that price... I’m just guessing on a reasonable risk/price to pay for a rental. I still think that kind of package could get a good depth player considering it’s a buyers market. Maybe someone like Zuccarello?

I think for the flames the only moves that make sense are:

Third pairing defense in Rh side
#12 forward
1a center
1a RW

So if Duchene, panarin and stone aren't available, the depth adds are going to be very underwhelming and will cost the flames a 4th or 5th round pick.

No room in Calgary, but I could see a team outside of the playoffs taking a flyer on him for a mid to late round pick.

His production has been next to nothing. Last year Brouwer almost laps Nichushkin in production. Nichushkin wishes he could produce like Brouwer.

It would have to be a team with cap space for it to be a draft pick for Nichushkin trade. His contract extends until the end of next year and carries a cap hit of $2.95M.

I could see Dallas wanting a RH defenceman though. Their 2nd pairing currently has Roman Polak. If the Flames are interested and Michael Stone is ready to go, maybe they could trade Stone for Nichushkin and a 6th round pick or something. That would save the Flames $550K off next year's cap if for some reason, they think there is something there and they have a very cheap way to add back the depth on defence.

But I'm probably just grasping at straws. There's probably nothing here for the Flames.

I wouldn’t want him on waivers. He is signed for next year as well for more than Czarnik is while producing worse.

I'd take a chance on him. He is huge and has a lot of skill, he's put up points before. Might just need a change of scenery.

From Friedman's 31 thoughts

https://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/...dline-dominos/

decisions on whether to move Panarin, Duchene, and Stone could hold the trade market up

Pens are ready to make a trade

Tampa could add a RHS defender at any time

Out of the box team that could snag both Bobrovsky and Panarin - Florida

Full market on Simmonds will become clear Panarin/Duchene/Stone decisions are revealed.
Boston is probably in on Simmonds no matter what, but others will want to see the full picture

Canes are trying to hurry along a Ferland trade, worried about another minor injury happening
Pens are among the teams that pursue Ferland.

Leafs will still look for a RHS d-man but it will be dollar in/ dollar out trade as they are concerned about Matthews and Marner's bonuses rolling over to next season.
Muzzin was attractive to the Leafs because he didn't cost a roster player compared to Pietrangelo or Pesce.
Blues asked for Nylander in Pietrangelo deal but that was rejected by Dubas

Kings and Leafs fought over getting Sandin included in the Muzzin deal
Leafs were most agressive persuer of Muzzin. Habs and TB were also in on him. Habs wanted him in part of the aborted Paccioretty trade.

Was surprised Timothy Liljegren wasn't part of the Muzzin trade but it looks like teams are down on him currently.

Pens could be in consideration to play an overseas game in Russia

Sekera is close to getting a conditioning stint. Oilers will need to clear cap room.

Hints that any team looking for a head coach should look at Flames Associate Coach Geoff Ward pointing to the records of the head coaches that he has worked with

If Dubas had a chance to flip Nylander for Pietrangelo and didn't he is a moron. Like Craig Button level of moron. Ok, not the bad but still. Hell, I would have even included the Leafs 1st if I were him to get that done because that would seriously move the needle for that D group. Much more than Muzzin.
