This is because:
(1) I think Hamonic and Muzzin have had comparable seasons so far, but I think Muzzin has had a much better career, and I think Muzzin is a better defenceman than Hamonic; and
(2) I think the chances of the Kings getting a better prospect than Noah Dobson are low, and I think the Islanders generally got a better return from the Flames than the Kings got from the Leafs.
But I definitely understand the people who argue the Flames' trade was better because of Hamonic's contract. Hamonic's contract, at least this year, does provide tremendous value.
Ultimately, I don't think its really helpful to compare the deals too much. From the Flames perspective, I think you could argue the Flames would rather have Dobson and two other high picks for the future, but the Flames wouldn't be as good without Hamonic this year.
|
Dobson seems pretty good but Ishakov doesn't. And, forgetting about the 2019 first rounder the Kings got, both Grundberg and Durzi look like solid prospects already. They are more known quantities that what Calgary gave up at the time.

|
You have to think just signing Matthews, Marner and Kapanen will eat up most of that 22M (if not all of it). If those 3 are signed, they would still need to sign 7 more players to fill out their 23-man roster for 2019-20.

Bottom line for Leafs fans to be happy about this trade even if Muzzin is only okay this spring, is that they don't have Ron Hainsey on the top pairing.
Ron. Hainsey.

Grundstrom is actually a good pick-up for LA (unfortunately). A very impressive time in the SweHL that has translated to the NA game. He would likely crack the main rosters of some teams across the league already. Strong work ethic, gritty, physical, with some offensive touch. Won't be surprised to see him in LA as the season winds down.
Durzi is more of the gamble with a higher risk involved. Sounds like he has some great offensive instincts but is still quite raw.
The 1st allows LA to take someone of their own choosing. Overall, not a bad haul for #2/#3 and for a team who won't be sniffing the playoffs for some time.

Think it’s a good move for TO but holy hype train. Even if he performs at his career best level it’s gonna be a disappointment with the way he’s being built up. Pressures gonna be on him now.

My interview with Darryl Sutter on Jake Muzzin in tomorrow's @TheTorontoSun
“He’s never played the right side. Anybody who says he’s played the right side isn’t watching the games. He’s played zero times on the right side in LA."

Muzzin went from quite underrated to super overrated in a day.

LS/RS is more important in the D-zone transition game IMO. So Muzzin is going to be playing an unfamiliar position with a partner who doesn't play especially well in his own end.

Rielly needs to play RD then. Don't make Muzzin, the new guy, play the unfamiliar position.

Muzzin has had a great career. But keyword is had, and I don't think he's quite at that level today.

43% ozone starts playing 21+ a night. His coach disagrees.
Muzzin puts up points, he's on a good contract, and he's got decent at worst advanced stats. He was on a bad team, but he's not the GM.
Good pick up for the Leafs, regardless if Muzzin plays with Reilly.

Latest news sounds like Babcock is keeping his top pair intact and putting Muzzin with Zaitsev.

I have to agree.
The Leafs picked up a bonafide top 4 d-man. They gave away assets they aren't likely to need. The Leafs d-core still has atrociously bad depth after this pickup. They could probably use a second a Muzzin level d-man.
The Leafs may also lose Gardiner.
The Leafs need to trade all of the late 1sts and middling prospects they can for top 4 d-men. They do have a somewhat limited window, as Tavares is 28. They should also take advantage of the good goaltending they have now, which may not last.
The Leafs are on a bit of a slide, but a lot of that has to do with them having over-performed at the beginning of the season. This move could shake things up a bit for them. However, I doubt it. You can't expect the entire top end of your forward core to continue putting up 1.5 ppg for the rest of the season.

That is quite an overhaul and turn around by the Leafs. I'll admit it, the Leafs know how to put together a hockey team.
Must be something in the Toronto water...

Ha! Yeah, kind of like when Burke got Pronger who needed out of no good Edmonton and Niedermayer who wanted to play with his brother.
Nothing wrong with landing Pronger but he wasn’t available under ordinary circumstances

Toronto is the first team to pick 1st in the NHL draft. It's true.
Also your geography point is dead on. I think the recent move to Toronto has really helped this team. Before a lot of players who were born in the Toronto area just didn't want to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But now that the Toronto Maple Leafs have moved to Toronto a lot more players want to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
