Yeah the burden placed on teachers has gotten pretty high actually. Seems like they have a lot of challenges.

Where's sliver when you need him to give us a little dose of the balancing / opposing opinion?

Also it’s Kindergarten so you have a wide variety of pre-k education so the curve not even considering developmental issues is a huge span. The other thing is that having your daughter become an independent learner is a huge win. The ability to teach yourself pays so many dividends later on in life.

My daughter is 6. She does not need to be an independent learner right now. I want people to teach her.

Shes not even that far ahead of normal. It's just that the bottom quarter of the class is so far behind that they take 80 percent of the teachers time.

It wasnt like that when I was in school. One of my best friends spent a few months in a different class when he fell behind. Seems like an obvious solution. So yes I do think a different approach would help her. Her being bored waiting for other kids to catch up is not what I want.

There are two problems that have been created over the last 10 years that are hurting the quality of learning. The first is the erosion of authority away from the teacher and toward the student, and the second is class size.

I remember having some of these students with severe behavioural problems or low IQ mixed into my elementary and junior high classes - they would typically have a full time assistant helping the teacher to handle them (this was late 90s / early 00s so I don't think it's a new trend).

I don't really see how being integrated into regular classes benefited these students at all - they were usually ostracized by the rest of the class and in rare cases made fun of. The vast majority of kids at that age are not mature enough to be kind and accepting of kids with clear learning issues. I can't imagine they were getting much out of educational content that was beyond their depth either.

Unfortunately many parents of children with special needs have this fantasy that their kid is going to be accepted by the class and participate just like the other kids. Sadly, that's not usually the case and it ends up being more of a distraction than anything.

There is a requirement to maintain a primary residency in order to get the taxpayer kickback for your secondary residency. But if you do not have a primary residency you cannot claim the kickback. But there is no requirement to claim a primary residency.

Actually yeah that's correct, apologies. The vast majority of members would have a residence in near their home constituency but as we are seeing now with Jagmeet Singh in Burnaby or in the past Joe Clark in NS, MPs can seek election in ridings nowhere near their residence. In these cases, the MP would not be entitled to the allowance. Obviously, this isn't applicable to the Kenney dust-up.

UCP candidate retracts claim about $50,000 carbon tax bill, number closer to $5,400

UCP candidate for Brooks-Medicine Hat Michaela Glasgo caused waves on social media Sunday when she tweeted that the church was facing a massive $50,000 carbon tax bill for 2019.

She later retracted the statement and clarified the cost would actually be around $5,400.

But the astounding $50,000 figure was retweeted by UCP Leader Jason Kenney, who added the note “we hear stories like this all the time, sadly.”

Glasgo said she tweeted about the bill after an appeal was made to her church’s congregation during Sunday’s service. She criticized the carbon tax for costing the church too much.

“Today at church we learned that the carbon tax is going to cost our church $50,000 this year ALONE,” she tweeted Sunday. “That’s the cost of one less pastor for the sick and suffering & less help for those who need it most in our community.”

In a Facebook post Monday morning, Glasgo doubled down on her claim. She said the $50,000 price tag included a number of facilities along with the main chamber.

“But as an institution, it is still referred to as ‘the church,’” she wrote. “And yes, it is being adversely affected by the NDP’s carbon tax.”

About two hours after that post, Glasgo said she received clarification from her church. She said she had confused the carbon tax bill with the organization’s total increasing operational costs for 2019.

The NDP reveals some its campaign strategy

It looks as if the NDP is going to market Rachel Notley by removing the NDP logo from all it's media printouts hoping her popularity as a leader rubs off on voters this upcoming election. Smart idea by the NDP to pit Notley against Kenney to get voters to focus on the personalities of each leader. Time will tell if this works.

But when asked whether they have a favourable or unfavorable opinion of the two leaders, the results are much closer (36.9 per cent favorability for Notley, 39.7 per cent for Kenney).

The poll surveyed 898 Albertans between Jan. 15 and 16, and has a 3.28 margin of error.

Quito Maggi, CEO of Mainstreet Research, said how Albertans perceive potential leaders may play a bigger role than party alliances on election day.

“This is not new branding; in fact, we’ve used the Rachel Notley logo for a number of years,” said Richardson. “Every election campaign is different but it will always reflect who we are and what our party stands for.”

This isn’t the first time a party has focused its branding on the leader.

The former Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta adopted the brand “Ralph’s Team” during the 1993 election.

A Canadian precedent could be set this week as the Supreme Court decides who pays to clean up the environmental mess left by a company when it goes broke.

The case has caught the interest of environmentalists, oil companies and governments, as well as banks and creditors across the country.

It focuses on Redwater Energy, a small Alberta oil and gas business that went bankrupt in 2015. Redwater had 80 oil and gas wells, most of which were inactive. The main lender, ATB Financial, and the receiver wanted to sell the company's 20 productive wells and use the proceeds to pay off debtors.
