Thats my mistake then. I was under the impression we could give them Brodie & a pick to
- either be left alone (don't think thats allowed though)
- fulfill a handshake deal as to which player they would choose (also likely not allowed, but let's be honest this happens)

I see. Still seems like a lot. A first to further "protect" a couple players or to ensure they take a particular player seems more palatable.

I would like to see a Brodie and Magiapane for Gallagher trade at the draft.

Brodie and Weber could be a solid top pairing for the Habs.

Don't see why the Flames would add to Brodie to get Gallagher.
Top pairing Dman should have more value than a top two line winger.
Gallagher's contract probably adds to his value though.

Gallagher's contract is one of the best in the league. I think his value his higher than TJ.
TJ would be a great addition to Weber though.

if you move someone like brodie at the draft, i think you move him for prospects... ultimately, you still have to guard against the expansion draft. If you are doing this before the deadline, then yeah, a guy like Gallagher makes sense.
7 protected: Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund, Janko, Bennett...
you throw in Gallagher, then you have to expose one of the back three...
personally, i think Calgary can try to get some younger talent at forward if you can...Montreal has a ton of prospects... while it might be hard to pry out suzuki, Romanov (D) and Phoehling its worth a look... the next tier of Olosson or Brooks possibly?

Flames might have to pay a 1st to prevent Seattle from taking Kylington or Hamonic. That would be well worth it.
|
Based on this list, I think the Flames may want to package a defenceman they need to protect and a forward they need to protect (Jankowski) for a better forward in the lead-up to the expansion draft.
I don't think they should pay Seattle to stay away from any of their players. Based on the last expansion draft, this is how the Flames would make Seattle very strong and hurt itself.
I think the strategy is to position yourself as best as possible and then let Seattle do its worst.

I'm not sure Janko gets protected. I think having the three kids on D is more valuable than him, as much as he's improved this year. And I'm not at all sure Seattle takes him. They might take, say Gillies instead.

True, but the options are 3D, 7F and 1 G or 4D, 4F and 1G
so if they trade Brodie for a keeper forward, you could expose Janko...but it would still limit you to only Valimaki, Hanafin and Andersson if you elect to protect young D... i am tempted to swap Gio for Andersson, tho it depends on where their respective games are in the next year and half...
edit, sorry, by "back three" i meant one of Backlund, Janko or Bennett

With the expansion draft approaching, it might be an impetus to consider packaging multiple assets, which would otherwise need to be protected, and other assets for a big player like Mark Stone. Of course, the Flames would have to move out tons of salary so they could resign a player like Stone in the first place, but the expansion draft could actually be a reason to push some chips in to get a player like Stone.
Ex: Kylington (who I would hate to include) + Jankowski + Neal + 2019 1st for Mark Stone
The Flames would probably then move Frolik and/or Michael Stone to recoup futures and make room to resign Mark Stone.
The Flames would then protect:
Gaudreau
Monahan
Lindholm
Tkachuk
Mark Stone
Backlund
Bennett
Hanifin
Valimaki
Andersson
Rittich

Would have been cool to actually have something come out of the conversations, but it seems we mostly just spent 2 1/2 years yelling our opinions at each other with very few people opening their eyes enough to find a middle ground.
Bennett is 22, and is the 6th/7th best forward on the best team in the Western Conference. He fights, he hits, he works his ass off. I love ‘em. He likely won’t be the 90 point stud we once dreamed of, but he’s developing right before our eyes. This looks to be an important year for the youngster as his 200 foot game has taken big steps. Thanks to the poor start from the bottom half of the roster offensively (which he was a big part of), he may not pop 40 points but I’d bet he pops 50 points within the next 2 seasons while delivering a strong defensive game and enough jam to keep Mangiapane fed for years.
Good player. Looks to be a good teammate. It’s likely that were he on another team, he’d be consistently in the top 6 due to lack of depth on other teams, but that’s part of being a good team. The depth keeps him as that 6/7, and it looks like a good spot for him right now. He’s helping the team win, and him stepping permanently into that 6th spot next season seems inevitable as his game continues to improve and as his consistency improves.
Saying “Bennett is what Bennett is” when the kid is 22 years old seems bafflingly short sighted to me.
|
People forget that he lost an entire year of development due to shoulder surgery.
There is a sizable amount of evidence that points to players taking a large step forward in their draft plus 4 year (Sam Reinhart, Jake Guentzel, Dylan
Larkin, and several others are great examples).
However, if we are being truly objective, Bennett has only had 3 seasons of actual play based development since his draft. I expect that he'll take his large step forward next year in his draft plus 5 (minus 1) year.
If we had got this years production and responsible game play from Bennett last year, I think everyone would have been happy to see that progression.
Fact of the matter is, we are being a little bit greedy right now. We have 4 players in the top 15 in scoring, and 5 players with over 50 points. Bennett contributing in other ways isn't hurting us.
Do we need more depth scoring? Absolutely, because more scoring is fun. But do we have time to continue to watch the evolution of Bennett? Undoubtedly.
He is in no way hurting this team right now, and by all accounts is great in the room and plays a rugged game that brings value.
If I'm reading Bingo's posts correctly, he's top 20 in high danger scoring chances in the league. That's really good. He is getting to the right spots to create the type of chances that lead to points. Does he need to work on executing? Of course.
My summer to do list for Bennett:
1. Work on your shot. Faster release, heavier, more accurate.
2. Get a sports psychologist and focus on improving your consistency.
3. All of this, of course, after enjoying some fountain pool parties and champagne from the Cup.

all true - but a quibble - the second option isn't 4D, 4F. It's 8 skaters.

Insider trading:
https://www.tsn.ca/nhl/video/insider...-steam~1595596
the Sens will 100% move Cody Ceci if they can get a similar return to what Muzzin got for the Kings
Sens will still have some competition from Canes as they will move one of Hamilton, Pesce, or Faulk if they can get a top 6 forward
LeBrun thinks Columbus will trade Panarin
The Jackets will need to sell Panarin and turn around and buy a player to fill the roster spot that Panarin vacates
Legitimate chance Matthews contract extension is done before trade deadline. Reason being that a 5-6 year deal is attractive to both sides than a 7 or 8 yr deal.
If it is a 5-6 year deal the AAV will be around Tavares' $11 million +/- 500k compared to a 7-8 year deal it would $12.5 mil to $13.5 mil AAV
Canes in a perfect world would like to move Ferland in the next week or two if someone meets their price.
Don't want to risk Ferland getting hurt and having his trade value drop.
Oilers are in no rush to hire new GM
may start to ask for permission to talk to candidates starting this week.
Question is if McPhee will allow the Oilers to talk to McCrimmon 4 weeks before the deadline.
McKenize says he would be shocked if McPhee would give permission at this time. More likely that permission would be given down the road at a less critical time for Vegas

I could maybe see Cody Ceci returning a second, or maybe a looooow first. Definitely just that, though -- no Grundstrom-like prospects.

Narrator: In fact they would never get any return for Ceci. Cody disappeared on February 8th 2019 and would not be heard from until the winter of 2061. When a couple traveling from Ontario recognized Cody Ceci, now 68 years of age and going by the name Gregor Kostopolus, in a small down of the coast of Greece he would be quoted as saying " I had to get the **** out of that ****hole organization".

With this whole panarin thing what would it take to pry him away from CBJ? Neal a first and dube?
I honestly think I’d do that

It'd take much, much more than that. They would certainly not take Neal -- they need all positive assets, otherwise they had might as well keep him.
Probably 1st + 2nd + Dube + Kylington, and honestly, the Flames would probably be outbid.
